?That’s the energy sector’s one-year return on the S&P/TSX Canadian index.

As of December 15, the Canadian energy sector posted a year-over-year return of about 44% on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Not every Canadian stock market sector did that well, however. For example, from December 15, 2021, to December 15, 2022, the financial sector declined by about?16%, real estate by 23%, IT by 36%, and the health sector by 50%.

The energy sector’s performance is partly responsible for the fact that the Canadian index as a whole returned about -9% for the same period, while in the U.S., the S&P 500 Index posted a loss of almost 16%. The weight of the energy sector in the S&P/TSX Canadian index is about 18%.
