Monthly Reflections February 2024
Since 2000 the number of annual land transport fatalities reported to IOGP has reduced by 90%, an incredible improvement (link to IOGP data website).
IOGP first introduced the Land Transport Safety Practice in 2005. ?The Practice has the collective learnings from land transport experts across the industry and practical guidance based on proven experience that is having a large impact in reducing serious incidents and fatalities.
A couple of weeks ago Revision 5 of the Safety Practice was published (download it here).? This Revision includes how to implement enhanced engineering controls like the use of cameras and fatigue detection and in vehicle monitoring systems.? The Land Transport Expert Group have prepared the revision to make it easier and simpler to adopt the Practice.
I would like to recognise Albert Ploeg and the Land Transport Expert Group, a team of dedicated professionals working together to share their best practices and support the entire industry achieve our objective of everyone going home safe.
We have come such a long way but we are not there yet. Tragically, in 2022 there were 3 land transport fatalities reported to IOGP.? Massively reduced but not yet meeting our ambition of eliminating fatalities.? Adopting the recommendations in the latest revision of the Land Transport Safety Practice will bring us closer to achieving that ambition.
