Top 10 Market :
The Electronic Component industry supports a wide range of markets and sectors, all with varying demands and requirements. Here is a closer look at the top 10 key markets within the industry:
- Consumer Electronics/Appliances: This is one of the largest markets for electronic components, encompassing products like smartphones, tablets, laptops, televisions, gaming consoles, and home appliances. The growth of this market is a result of the rapid technology advancements as a result of connectivity becoming the central theme in consumer electronics with the number of connective devices being projected to reach 29.34 billion by 2030 in comparison with 15.14 in 2023. This has led to companies expanding their product lines to ensure they can tailor their products to include the latest technology as well as supporting them in the globalization of their products which is allowing them to enter emerging markets such as Asia and Africa which have recently become significant growth to this market. Components in Demand: Microprocessors, Memory Chips, Sensors, Displays, and Batteries.
- Automotive: The automotive industry relies heavily on electronic components for vehicle control systems, infotainment systems, safety features, and electric vehicle (EV) technology, as a result, the adoption of electric vehicles, autonomous technology and changing consumer preferences has led to those within this sector to focus on innovation in order to keep up evolving customer demands. Most recently, this can be seen through the development of self-driving cars with new car sales expected to reach 58 million by 2030 and 26% of new car sales globally expected to be electric vehicles. Components in Demand: Microcontrollers, Sensors, LED Lighting, and Power Electronics.
- Industrial and Manufacturing: Industrial applications require robust and reliable electronic components for automation, control systems, robotics, and machinery which has become increasingly important. Recent years have seen manufacturers developing plans to help avoid disruptions, especially following the effects of COVID-19 which led to multiple companies losing out on revenue due to supply chain issues leading to longer lead times. This led to multiple companies looking at alternative manufacturing solutions such as relocating their manufacturing to Europe and the US in order to build up supply chain resilience (This has been explored further in the June 2023 Newsletter). Components in Demands: Sensors, Connectors, and Power Management Devices.
- Aerospace and Defence: This sector relies on high-reliability components that can withstand extreme conditions and is still a prominent market/sector due to continuous innovation, strategic partnerships and government investments; playing a crucial role in national security, technological advancements and space exploration has led to this becoming a dynamic and forever evolving industry. It was reported that the industry accumulated revenues of $741 billion in 2022 (up just 3% from 2021) and $67 billion in operating profit (up 8%), according to PwC analysis. Components in Demand: Microelectronics, RF/Microwave Components, and Ruggedized Connectors.
- Telecommunications: The telecommunications market continues to evolve in response to technological advancements, changing consumer behaviours, and the demand for faster and more reliable connectivity. As 5G networks mature and new applications emerge, the industry is poised for further growth and innovation leading to companies evolving their business models to ensure they can keep up with demand and ensure they can remain competitive within the market. Components in Demand: RF/Microwave Devices, Optical Components, and High-Speed Data Connectors.
- Medical Devices: The healthcare industry is dynamic and continually evolving to meet the changing needs of patients and advances in medical science and technology. As the industry continues to grow, it presents opportunities for innovation, investment, and improvements in patient care; this can be seen through the market projections with the global medical devices market size being valued at $512.29 billion in 2022 & and projected to grow from $536.12 billion in 2023 to $799.67 billion by 2030. Components in Demand: Sensors, Microcontrollers, Imaging Components, and Diagnostic Equipment.
- Energy and Power: The energy and power market is at the forefront of global efforts to address climate change and transition to a more sustainable energy future. As technology advances and policies evolve, the industry will continue to experience dynamic growth and transformation. In the energy sector, electronic components are used in renewable energy systems, power distribution, and control systems.
- Components in Demand: Power Electronics, Capacitors, and Transformers.

This is due to the increased number of diverse applications like smart homes, industrial automation, healthcare etc. with a key example being the Industry 4.0 technology which has enabled B2B companies to maintain direct connections to their products in the field. Another reason for the growth in this market is due to the economic impact and global reach this market has on driving job creation, new business models and revenue opportunities for companies, for example in 2018 the world economy benefitted by $175 billion from the productivity benefits to businesses from the use of IoT. Components in Demand: Sensors, Wireless Communication Modules, and Energy-Efficient Components.
- Semiconductor Manufacturing: The semiconductor manufacturing market plays a pivotal role in the technology ecosystem, supporting the advancement of various industries. As technology continues to evolve, the industry will likely experience ongoing changes and innovations highlighting how it remains one of the most prominent markets within the industry. Components in Demand: Wafer Fabrication and Testing Components.
- Computing and Data Centers: The computing and data centres market continues to evolve to meet the growing demands of businesses, governments, and consumers for computing power, storage, and data processing capabilities. Advances in technology and the ever-increasing reliance on digital services ensure that the market will remain dynamic and competitive. In 2021, there were 209 data centre deals, with an aggregate value of more than $48 billion, up some 40 per cent from 2020, when the deals were worth $34 billion. In the first half of 2022, there were 87?deals, with an aggregate value of $24 billion. From 2015 to 2018, private equity buyers accounted for 42 per cent of the deal value. Their share increased to 65 per cent from 2019 to 2021 and to more than 90 per cent in the first half of 2022.Components in Demand: Energy-Efficient Components.
