Let's Take a Look Back to Move Forward:
The Electronic Component market was valued at USD $186.38 billion in 2022 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5%, reaching USD $328.50 billion by 2023. Active components have been identified as catering to the largest share of the industry, followed by passive components which align with the growth of the IoT/IIoT and Automotive sectors.
What are the limitations of the industry?
The industry is facing multiple limitations as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic; packaging failures have led to the failure of semiconductor devices due to corrosion or device mechanical tension as well as affected the lead time of many components; disruption in the orderly running of the supply chain of companies has led to a limited ability to develop business, especially between the majority of companies and China, which is anticipated to continue being a limitation.
However, despite these issues, the market is still projected to grow tremendously over the coming years. Let's look into why.
What is causing growth in the industry?
There are multiple reasons why the industry is still growing rapidly despite the impact of COVID-19 and other factors. One main reason is the growth of the IoT and IIoT sector which is currently undergoing major advances; this has resulted in IoT connections being estimated to hit 25 billion by the end of 2023. This can be seen as a benefit of COVID-19 after thousands were forced to work from home leading to an increase in demand for the internet, mobile phones, microphones and laptops. The accelerated penetration has not only contributed to the rise of Industry 4.0 but highlights the reason why active components cater to the largest share of the industry; it has been the most profitable of a large range of technical advances due to the increased demand for the modular IC and multi-layered ICs that are used within these devices.

Another reason for the projection is the growth of the Automotive market which is a result of the growth of electric/ hybrid/ plug-in vehicles leading to an increased demand for passive components. In 2022, electric vehicle sales increased by 40% and 42,284 new EVs were registered in the UK in December 2022, a figure which is 52.62% higher than the number registered a year earlier.
What other factors do you think are contributing to the growth of the industry?
