Obsolescent Components:

With the demand for semiconductors increasing, it is likely that we will see an acceleration of end of life (EOL) and obsolescence of specific nodes. The rate of obsolescence on semiconductors has increased by 30%, resulting in a continuously shrinking component lifecycle which could lead to a decrease of certain parts life span from 10 years to 7 years.

The Causes:

Planned Obsolescence to Promote Sales: Despite many countries banning planned obsolescence, it is still rampant in some industries meaning that companies are either planning to discontinue components, are designing products to break quickly into the market, or become obsolete in the short to mid-term to promote sales of new products. Product discontinuation force customers to commit to traditional last time buys where finished components must be purchased all at once to cover future needs, resulting in increased costs on top of capital tied up in stock. ?

Continuous Technical Advancements: The continuous development of technology and applications is leading OEMs and Semiconductor Manufacturing chains to reassess their product profitability, causing them to shift their production and cut uneconomical lines to keep up with shifting demand within the industry. An example of this is the rapid innovation in lower voltage components which is leading to the increased obsolescence of programmable-logic devices (PLDs) with the introduction of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), which are now typically below 2.6 volts and go as low as 0.85 volts.

Company Acquisitions: When electronic suppliers acquire another supplier, the newly merged company often discontinue some of their product lines to eliminate product redundancy. For example, Freescale merged with NXP and then Qualcomm purchased NXP for $39 billion dollars leading to product overlap leading to certain product lines being discontinued to push customer to the products that have the best features.

The Effects:

Effects on High-Reliability Markets: Some industries are more restricted than others meaning that certain components must meet specific requirements before entering the market which can take significantly longer due to them having to go through clinical trials, data collection and reviews of quality systems. Because of the critical tasks high-reliability components perform, component obsolescent poses a monumental threat compared to consumer electronics as these applications rely on the accessibility of legacy components (Longer lifespan, more stable and high energy outputs) which are also seeing a rise in EOL announcements. ??

Supply Chain Disruptions: Component Obsolescence can disrupt supply chains due to the rippling effects of EOL announcements which can lead to OEMs mass-buying already limited stock to keep up with demand leading to component shortages. An example of this was the 2018-2019 MLCC shortage which occurred when OEMs began mass buying after several Original Component Manufacturers (OCMs) gave EOL notices.

Increased Pressures: With the increasing rate of obsolescence, there has been an increasing pressure on engineers with 94% stating that they felt greater time pressure and stress to solve problems more efficiently than they did prior.

Counterfeit Components: Shortages of certain components caused by EOL announcements and discontinuation leads to customers purchasing from alternative sources (as highlighted in the previous article) which increases the risk of companies purchasing counterfeit components. According to Counterfeit reports, EOL, Not Recommended for New Design and Discontinued parts make up 71% of the report since 2013.

Component Damage: Purchasing from alternative sources also increases the risk of introducing damaged components into the market due to existing components being cleaned with chemicals upon recovery, washing and re-marking which can lead to shorting and corroding of bond wires and pads.

Lost Revenue/Increase Costs: Linking to the prior two points, purchasing damaged or counterfeit components can increase costs due to lost revenue as a result of not being able to fulfil orders or issues within applications.

How to Mitigate:

Purchase from Licenced Manufacturers: Partnering with licensed semiconductor manufacturers like Rochester Electronics can mitigate the risks of components EOL as they can access previously discontinued components that are newly manufactured and are 100% compliant with the original specification.

Case Management: Organize and track cases such as processes, transactions or responses that define complex activity to help strategically plan and prepare upcoming component obsolescence.

Remove Design Problems: Removing design problems such as shortage-prone components and those at risk of become EOL as early as the design phase can ensure you avoid introduction these components into new applications.

Market Intelligence Tools: MIT that collect real-time data from historical transactions, trends and other market factors can help to alert engineers of risky components on their BOMs to help them identify alternative sources early on the design stage.

Absolutely intrigued by your deep dive into the world of obsolete components! ?? Albert Einstein once said, "The measure of intelligence is the ability to change." Adapting to this ever-evolving scenario is key. ?? Perhaps next month, exploring the role of innovation in overcoming obsolescence could spark interest? By the way, speaking of innovation, Treegens is proud to support a Guinness World Record attempt for Tree Planting. This could be an exciting opportunity for MRSolutions to get involved! ?? https://bit.ly/TreeGuinnessWorldRecord
