The Monthly Messenger - January 2023

We’ve got global communications’ number — so we’re sharing important updates and discussions with you, plus some insights into what the netnumber Global Data Services team has going on.

Welcome back to the monthly messenger. In this first newsletter of the new year, we’re discussing all the exciting topics and events that occurred in the world of mobile communications (and for the netnumber team) in January. This month, we headed to Hawaii and celebrated another great #PTC with lots of hand-shaking, introductions, and catch-ups. We also unveiled a new, revolutionary service for players in the global mobile ecosystem looking to deliver enhanced messaging capabilities (more on that below).?

There’s a lot to unpack in this kickoff to 2023, so let’s dig in!

-Your friends from the netnumber Global Data Services team.

Innovative, Interesting, or Irrelevant??

Let’s talk about the big-ticket items and up-and-coming topics in the world of global communications. Think of this like a ‘hot or not’ for the telecommunications fanatics out there.?

Feel free to use the comments to weigh in and share your thoughts on these trends and their impacts:

Is eSIM usage on the rise?: SIM cards have been part of the mobile device experience for so long, even the telco layman knows about it — but as the technology has shifted more toward embedded SIMs, it looks like these eSIMs might soon corner the market (despite a history of hesitance). In fact, Juniper Research’s latest report on the topic, published in January 2023, found that the value of the global eSIM market will increase by almost 250% over the next four years. What does this mean for the mobile experience?

Is omnichannel reshaping the world of messaging?: The continued demand for feature-rich communications has led omnichannel and RCS (Rich Communications Service) options to quickly become the next-gen stand-in for long-established #MMS and #SMS strategies. It’s not surprising that users want the robust capabilities that come with these options, and so service providers are looking to pivot. But how exactly is this transformation taking shape across the global ecosystem? Where is omnichannel headed next to deliver increased value? To start the conversation, check out this conversation with WhatsApp from MEF.?

How far in the green should we be?: Sustainability is the ‘it’ topic across nearly every vertical, but technology and telecommunications have a distinct focus on it due to the demanding, power-hungry nature of deployments. To combat carbon footprints and reduce impacts on the environment, #telco giants like Verizon have been signing renewable energy deals, and green goals have become a mainstay of many organizations’ corporate ethos. How far can we take this as an industry, and how soon can we say we’ve really accomplished our green goals?

So, what do you think? Are these trending topics innovative, interesting or irrelevant?

January was a big month for our product portfolio because we officially launched our RCS solution. We’ve already noted the increased demand for this service and the feature-rich capabilities it brings to users and businesses (high-res multimedia, custom-branded messaging, location sharing and more). Still, as experts in the arena of the mobile communications ecosystem, we know that getting to a good thing can be hard.?

In a complex ecosystem, we continually seek to deliver ease, simplicity, cost efficiency and powerful solutions to MNOs, CPSs and enterprises — no compromises needed. So, in the pursuit of #richcommunications, that’s exactly what this new service does for our customers.?

We’re pretty proud of it, so if you’re interested, read our recent press release here.

Out and About

Our big destination this month was, you guessed it, beautiful Honolulu, Hawaii. Sure, we took in our fair share of sunshine and hoped to get our toes in the sand, but we are glad to say that our time was well spent reconnecting with old friends, making new acquaintances, talking business and making moves in this rich community. Needless to say, we’re already looking forward to #PTC24.?

In case you missed it, don’t forget to take a look at the interview we did while on site for some interesting tidbits about what we’ve had going on (a new product release, no less) and more.?

Your Final Food for Thought

Ever heard the term ‘NNID’? It’s become somewhat of a widely adopted industry acronym (much like how Kleenex has become synonymous with tissue), but what many don’t know is that the term originated right here with us at netnumber.?

It’s high time we unpacked the story of this identification term, so if you’re curious to learn more about what role this plays in the global ecosystem and how it came to be, check out our latest blog: Where Did Telecom Get #NNID?
