Monthly food for thought for research leaders

Monthly food for thought for research leaders

Welcome to the August 2024 edition of our newsletter.

It's been a big couple of months since our last update and we have lots of news, including a new article, client interview, and details of our new strategic partnership.

This month we are sharing our first client story in the form of an interview with Professor Kerri-Lee Krause, outgoing VC at Avondale University.? Elsa Evers sat down with Kerri-Lee recently to reflect on her time at the helm of Avondale, and the long term collaboration with Research Strategies Australia. We will be sharing more of our client stories and case studies in coming months, showcasing the amazing transformational change our clients are ushering in across the Australian research sector.

In case you missed it, we recently published an article sharing some reflections on research missions, and introduced our alternative concept of outcome-oriented strategies and ambitions.

In company news, we are very excited to announce our new partnership with The Lens to support Australian government innovation. Under this arrangement we will provide a home-grown data provider and analytics service as an alternative to large multinationals like Elsevier, Clarivate, and Digital Science to support government policy, planning and evaluation.

And as always, we also share below our regular thought provoking insights from LinkedIn including analysis and strategic insights from our work with clients.

I hope you enjoy this edition, and please make a time to meet with me if you want to work with us or just learn more about anything you read below.

From Missions to Outcomes: Redefining Research Strategies for Greater Impact

Distinguishing between outcome-oriented and mission-oriented research is crucial for organisation addressing complex societal challenges. Understanding these paradigms can significantly impact strategic planning and resource allocation. Outcome-oriented research focuses on achieving specific, measurable goals, allowing for clear progress tracking and real-time adjustments. In contrast, mission-oriented research involves rallying resources around broad, long-term objectives, emphasising the journey rather than the destination.

The Lens and Research Strategies Australia Partner to Support Australian Government Innovation

The Lens and Research Strategies Australia (RSA) are thrilled to announce a strategic partnership, culminating in becoming an approved provider to government of research performance data and analytical services.?

?

Dr Richard Jefferson, CEO of Cambia (doing business as The Lens), expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration:

“This partnership signifies a major step forward in our mission to enhance research impact, evaluation and policy development through open, innovative and evidence-informed approaches. We are excited to work closely with RSA to deliver high-quality services to the Australian Government.”

Dr. Tim Cahill, Managing Director of RSA, also shared his thoughts:

“We are proud to formalise our collaboration with Cambia, a trusted partner for many years. Being an approved supplier to government is a testament to our joint commitment to advancing research and providing exceptional data and analytical services. We look forward to leveraging our combined expertise to support the Australian Government.”

The offer to provide research performance data and analytical services, effective from 2024 to 2027, involves making available two key products and service categories to the Australian Government:

  1. Provision of Research Output Metadata and Citation Information: We will now be able to deliver comprehensive metadata and citation details across traditional, non-traditional, and emerging research-related outputs, using Lens.org. This information will be crucial for bibliometric and scientometric analyses supporting government research evaluation frameworks and policy development. Uniquely, The Lens In4M (International Industry and Innovation Influence Mapping) allows evaluation of past and future impact, through linking global patents to Australian research findings.
  2. Analytical Services and Advice: The analytical and advisory services of Research Strategies Australia will be made available to government entities encompassing responsible research assessment, bibliometric analysis, development of metrics and indicators, research performance analysis, and the application of responsible artificial intelligence (AI) in research evaluation and policy development.

This partnership marks a pivotal moment in the longstanding relationship between RSA and Cambia, formalised through a memorandum of understanding and licensing arrangement. Under this agreement, RSA will serve as a preferred provider of consulting and advisory services utilising Lens.org data in the Australian market, offering a home-grown solution to meet the needs of government and the research sector.

For more information about this partnership and our services, please contact Ms Elsa Evers (Marketing Manager Research Strategies Australia) on [email protected] or The Lens at [email protected].

ANALYSIS

Outcome-oriented research has spillovers just like basic research

Which university has won the ‘research excellence’ arms race in Australia since 2010?

Trying to make the next Boston or Cambridge in Australia is probably folly.

Are we deluding ourselves about the value of university research precincts?

?

STRATEGY

Your ‘research strategy’ (remember that PDF on your website?) was out of date before you even published it.

Predicting what’s next for university research funding in Australia.
