Meet Jan Enevold, Lead Consultant of Commercial Shipping at Faststream Recruitment
In this interview, we are joined by Jan Enevold, a Lead Consultant of Commercial Shipping at Faststream Recruitment. Jan brings a wealth of experience and insight into the evolving landscape of the commercial shipping sector. With a deep understanding of industry trends and challenges, Jan provides valuable perspectives on how professionals and companies can navigate the complexities of this dynamic field.
What trends do you foresee impacting the commercial shipping market in the next five years, and how should companies prepare for these changes?
"To stay competitive and compliant, companies should prepare strategically. A significant trend affecting not only shipping but all industries is ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance). International regulations, like IMO 2023 and IMO 2050, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and adopting greener technologies, will influence how owners and operators choose to build and manage their fleets. Economic and geopolitical tensions will continue, necessitating close monitoring to anticipate shifts in trade routes and demand. The labor market and workforce development will also be challenging, with difficulties in recruiting and retaining skilled labor. Companies will need to invest in training and development programs to upskill existing employees."
What professional development opportunities do you recommend for someone looking to advance in the commercial shipping sector?
"Advancing in the commercial shipping sector requires a combination of industry knowledge, leadership skills, and technical expertise. Some professional development opportunities include enrolling in undergraduate or postgraduate programs in maritime or shipping, exploring professional certifications, and attending specialized courses. Networking and attending industry association events can broaden one's connections. Joining associations like the International Chamber of Shipping, the Baltic and International Maritime Council, or the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers can also be beneficial. These organizations offer courses and events. Additionally, participating in industry conferences and seminars is a great way to stay updated on trends and network with peers."
How do you advise candidates to differentiate themselves in a competitive job market?
"Differentiating oneself in a competitive job market requires a strategic approach that highlights one's strengths, experiences, and capabilities. Candidates can stand out by tailoring their resume and cover letter to each job application, emphasizing relevant skills and experiences. It is essential to focus on quantifiable achievements and demonstrate the value added in previous roles. Developing a strong online presence with an engaging professional profile, including a professional photo, a strong headline, and detailed work experiences, is crucial. Adding new certifications and upskilling through recognized and accredited industry bodies can also help candidates differentiate themselves."
What role does networking play in the shipping industry, and how can candidates effectively build their professional network?
"Networking plays a crucial role in the shipping industry, facilitating career advancement, business opportunities, and the exchange of industry knowledge. Given the global nature of shipping, building a strong professional network can significantly impact a candidate’s career prospects. For those in business development or sales roles, networking can lead to new partnerships and clients. On professional social networking platforms such as LinkedIn, candidates should create a professional profile and join and follow relevant groups to engage with other industry professionals. Staying updated with industry news and trends through publications like Tradewinds, Splash, and Lloyd’s, as well as joining the Faststream newsletter, can also help build and maintain a professional network."
In your opinion, what are the top three soft skills that candidates should develop to succeed in commercial shipping roles?
"In my opinion, the top three soft skills candidates should develop to succeed in commercial shipping roles are communication and negotiation skills, organizational and time management skills, and conflict management. Communication and negotiation skills are imperative in all commercial shipping roles. Good organizational and time management skills are crucial, as many tasks require timely responses. Conflict management is also essential, as the shipping and maritime industry often presents volatile situations that require composed responses and tactful management."
What is something interesting or fun that others don’t know about you?
"With a Nordic name such as Jan Enevold, some people may not know that I grew up in Gran Canaria, Spain. This experience sparked a passion for good food and wine, leading me to become an avid cook. I enjoy experimenting with different cuisines and hosting friends and colleagues to share these culinary experiments."
