10 Tips To Tell Your Leadership Story Through Your CV

10 Tips To Tell Your Leadership Story Through Your CV

When seeking an executive role in the maritime and shipping sectors, your CV should be a strategic narrative that highlights your leadership, innovation, and vision for the industry’s future.

Here’s how to ensure your CV stands out in the competitive world of maritime leadership:

1. Start with a strong Executive Summary - highlight your key achievements, leadership style and unique value proposition. This is your elevator pitch, so make it count.

2. Highlight strategic impact - focus on the outcomes of your strategic initiatives. Did you lead a successful turnaround? Implement a digital transformation that increased operational efficiency? Make key changes to improve decarbonisation?

3. Showcase leadership experience - demonstrate your ability to lead diverse teams, manage large-scale projects, and drive organisational change.

4. Quantify achievements - use metrics and specific examples to demonstrate your impact in various roles, whether it’s increasing revenue, reducing operational costs, or achieving measurable improvements in decarbonisation targets etc.

5. Detail industry expertise - your CV should reflect your deep knowledge of the sector. Highlight industry-specific challenges and your ability to develop innovative solutions.

6. Include key partnerships and stakeholder engagement - highlight instances where your relationship management skills have led to successful collaborations, new business opportunities, or favourable regulatory outcomes.

7. Focus on succession planning and talent development - mention any mentoring roles you’ve taken on, leadership development programmes you’ve initiated, or the success of individuals you’ve coached.

8. Emphasise global and regional experience - highlight your experience managing operations across different geographical regions, working with international teams, or navigating cross-border challenges.

9. Align with Industry Trends - the maritime industry is continually evolving, with trends such as decarbonisation, digitalisation, and diversity. Align your CV with these trends by showcasing how you’ve adapted to or led initiatives in these areas.

10. Keep it concise and relevant - avoid unnecessary jargon and keep your language straightforward.

Meet Jeralyn Chong, Senior Recruitment Consultant for Marine at Faststream Recruitment

Meet Jeralyn Chong, Senior Recruitment Consultant for Marine at Faststream Recruitment

In this interview, we have the pleasure of speaking with Jeralyn Chong, a highly experienced Senior Recruitment Consultant within the Marine team at Faststream Recruitment. Jeralyn specialises in recruiting for a diverse range of roles within the logistics and freight-forwarding sectors. With her extensive knowledge and expertise, she plays a crucial role in connecting talented professionals with leading opportunities in the industry.

What are the key challenges employers in the marine sector face when it comes to talent acquisition?

“Key challenges that I’ve seen thus far include a shortage of talent with the right skills, as well as a challenging work environment. Some roles require employees to be based offshore, where they have to spend long periods away from home.”

Can you discuss the career progression opportunities within the Marine industry and how you help candidates navigate them?

“The marine industry offers a wide range of roles within shipping, offshore oil and gas, marine engineering, marine research, and maritime logistics. I tend to have in-depth conversations with my candidates to understand where their career interests lie and how their skill sets could add value to my clients in different areas.”

What is something interesting or fun that most people don’t know about you?

“I enjoy being outdoors and can spend the day staring at clear blue skies. I love being at the beach, even though I can’t swim.”

Faststream Recruitment Group Joins SSA YEG Kayaking Cleanup Event to "Take Action on Waste"

Our Singapore team took part in the SSA YEG Kayaking Cleanup at Marina Reservoir, a hands-on initiative aimed at reducing environmental waste. Organised by Peninsula in collaboration with the SSA Young Executives Group (YEG) and WISTA Singapore, this event was part of the broader “Take Action on Waste” campaign, designed to confront environmental challenges with proactive solutions.

The women from our Singapore office had an enriching morning paddling alongside industry peers, all united by a shared mission to safeguard our planet. Their participation exemplified the power of teamwork, environmental responsibility, and industry collaboration.

At Faststream Recruitment Group, we are committed to making a meaningful difference through community involvement, environmental action, and forward-thinking solutions.

A special thank you to Sasha Josri, Antonethe Fadallan-Lim, and Jeralyn Chong for representing Faststream Recruitment Group at this impactful event.
