This month at Buro Happold – November 2023
Welcome to the This month at Buro Happold newsletter. In this issue, we look at highlights from the past month, including our 40th anniversary in Riyadh, decarbonisation legislation in the US, and our landmark projects being showcased at COP28.
Showcasing the future of green innovation at COP28
Originally a host for the World Expo in 2021, Expo City Dubai is now the host for another world event: COP28. This includes Terra, The Sustainability Pavilion.
This striking building was the centre of the sustainability district for the World Expo and now sits at the heart of the Green Zone at COP28. Passive design choices for cooling and water/energy reduction were central, and the ‘energy trees’ are a striking part of the design that act as a renewable energy source. Terra promotes sustainable design, energy efficiency and technological innovation.
Pathways to decarbonization: legislation shaping the US landscape
Decarbonization of buildings and assets is of critical importance; it represents a clear pathway to achieve necessary global climate goals.?
The landscape in the US is changing. In part, this is being driven by legislation to address harmful emissions and to encourage innovation in renewable energy.
This article looks at the legislation, regulation and other drivers of decarbonization across the United States.
Celebrating 40 years in Riyadh
Buro Happold has a rich heritage of working across the Middle East. We spoke to director and former Buro Happold CEO Padraic Kelly about the start of this journey with founder Ted Happold, tracing a timeline from a competition in 1967 to establishing our first office in Riyadh in 1983.
From the Tuwaiq Palace, a significant development which paved the way for future innovative projects, to the present day with our new office at Olaya Towers, Padraic reflects on 40 years of exceptional work across the Kingdom.
Delivering future design and construction
We are pleased to share that we have been selected for the University of Cambridge Estates Division Professional Services Framework. We look forward to working with the university to deliver future design and construction projects.
