This month at Buro Happold – February 2025
In this month's issue we look at highlights from February, including National Apprenticeship Week, the urban regeneration of Boston’s Seaport District, and our ‘Revolution in Retrofit’ campaign.
Illuminating the history of New York City’s Black community
Over the past year, our New York lighting design and electrical teams have proudly supported the creation of HALO, led by artist Immanuel Oni. HALO is a public art installation memorialising the now paved over Chrystie Street African Burial Ground.
Located at the M'Finda Kalunga Garden in Sara D. Roosevelt Park, the installation is a thoughtful interplay of form and light, enhancing public awareness of the history of the Lower East Side.
Futureproof – Engineering Resilient Cities
Is Berlin-Brandenburg already fit for the future, and if not, how can the metropolitan region become 'futureproof'?
Our three-part Lab-Talks series ‘Futureproof – Engineering Resilient Cities’ in Berlin addressed these questions, exploring how cities and regions can address the challenges of climate change, urbanisation and digitalisation.
A transformative impact on Boston’s seaport district?
Boston’s Seaport District is one of the most transformational urban regeneration projects in the United States.
The development of Boston’s Seaport District has resulted in a series of groundbreaking projects that not only redefine the urban landscape but also emphasise sustainability, community engagement, and environmental responsibility.?
Revolution in Retofit: Reinvigorating the past
As the race towards net zero carbon intensifies, retrofit is transforming buildings and spaces to reduce environmental impact, while preserving their character and purpose.
From enhancing energy efficiency to repurposing materials in line with circular economy principles, retrofitting requires a multidisciplinary approach. In our ‘Revolution in Retrofit’ series, we have been exploring how creative thinking and collaboration pave the way for a more sustainable future.?
Athens: what can we learn from Europe’s hottest city?
Athens is mainland Europe’s hottest metropolis and getting warmer, with the past June the hottest on record. What can the city teach us about these mounting and compounding problems?
We sent our Urban C:lab team to explore the intersectionalities of extreme heat in the city.
How can we make sure no one is left behind in the energy transition?
Our ?Net Zero Terrace Workshop in London explored how service models can deliver accessible, low carbon energy and healthy, warm homes at no upfront cost to the householder.
‘Net Zero Terrace’ is a collaborative initiative which aims to decarbonise nearly 6 million terrace homes, reduce energy use, and transition communities from fossil fuels to renewable energy. By working closely with local authorities, community groups, and energy suppliers, we are creating a replicable model that supports local supply chains and improves health outcomes for wider communities.
Shaping careers and building futures
At Buro Happold, we understand the importance of nurturing talent, creating pathways to success, shaping careers, and building futures.
In February our UK offices celebrated National Apprenticeship Week and the incredible impact our apprentices have on our business. Our UK apprenticeship programme blends hands-on training with part-time study, providing a unique pathway for aspiring professionals to achieve their career goals.
