How and why upskilling can improve career growth in Architecture & Interior Design
We live and work in a time where job security no longer comes from being employed, but from being employable. So, how do you remain employable in today’s fast-changing architecture and interior design sectors?
Skill shortages
The architecture and interior design sectors are already starting to see skills shortages in areas such as AI, big data, and green tech, to name a few. The people who have invested in themselves and are upskilled in these areas now command the top salaries and have the pick of the opportunities.
New ways of learning
Gone are the days when you needed to take months off from work and go back to school. E-learning is now leading the charge in personal development and increasingly sophisticated interactive learning portals are the way forward.
Improving your existing skills and knowledge counts too
Upskilling doesn’t always have to be about learning new skills and knowledge, it can be about improving or building upon the skills and knowledge you already have, including your own soft skills.
Choose your preferred learning path
There is a raft of content out there to help people improve their soft skills and whether you want to learn by watching a YouTube video, listening to a podcast, downloading an App on your phone, or perhaps simply reading a book, it’s available.
Soft skills are desirable
Employers want to employ well-rounded people who have that perfect blend of skills, knowledge, and experience, and of course, a great personality to go with it. But we must not underestimate the importance experience plays in upskilling. After all, so much of what we learn both in our careers and in life comes from the experience of what worked and possibly more importantly, what didn’t work.
Qualifications versus experience
Often employers will view qualifications as a non-negotiable must-have and you simply either do or do not have the required qualifications. The qualification gets you through the door, now you need to be able to show what you’ve done with it and how that makes you stand out. Remember in most cases experience trumps qualifications, but experience and qualifications together trump everything.
Employer investment
Employers are increasingly recognising the importance of promoting a continuous learning culture in both attracting and retaining talent and the best companies are bridging the skills gap by investing in upskilling their people before going to market. New generations entering the sector have more career choices and opportunities for personal development will figure high on their agenda.
Meet Bonnie Amos-English, Department Manager of FRAME Recruitment
Meet Bonnie Amos-English, as the Department Manager, Bonnie wears many hats, overseeing both the contract and permanent Architecture and Interior Design teams. Her expertise extends to supporting the team and nurturing relationships with her own clients. With almost five years of dedicated service at FRAME, Bonnie returned in 2022 to take the helm of team management, bringing a wealth of experience and a passion for excellence to the forefront.
As the Department Manager of Architecture and Interior Design recruitment of FRAME, what qualities do you look for in potential candidates, and how do you assess their suitability for your clients?
“I am completely led by my clients in what qualities I look for. The key for me is to spend time with my clients fleshing out a detailed spec of the exact kind of person they are looking for. Especially for Senior/Leadership/Exec roles, it’s essential that I find the right person and not just the right skill set. I assess suitability for a role based on the spec my client and I have worked on together, measuring against experience, qualifications, soft skills, and cultural fit. Each person I speak to about the next step in their career will have an in-depth meeting with me, where we can discuss their experience and goals at length, to make sure the position I’m discussing with them is a suitable match and vice versa.”
What trends in recruitment do you anticipate for the Architecture and Interior Design industry in 2024?
“I anticipate 2024 to be a steadier year in terms of recruitment. For the past few years, we have experienced more external stressors than ever before, and I am hopeful that 2024 will be a calmer year. Therefore, I expect to see more promotions, more growth and more “positive” recruitment rather than the panic hirings and firings we saw in 2020 and 2021. I expect to see companies focusing on improving and marketing their EVP (Employee Value Proposition), reviewing their benefits and compensation, and strategising how they attract hard-to-recruit talent to their company over the many other options available.”
What is something interesting or fun that others don’t know about you?
“I got into running about eight months ago, so I am one of those “all the gear and no idea” people out on the road. I’ve just signed up to do a charity 10k with a colleague in April, so I’ll train for that over the coming months. I am a big believer in exercising for your mental health, and running has been an amazing outlet for that.”
