6 Reasons Why "No" can be a Path to a Better "Yes"

6 Reasons Why "No" Can Be a Path to a Better "Yes"

In the competitive Architecture and Interior Design job market, rejection can be disheartening, but it often serves as a redirection towards growth, resilience, and a more fulfilling career path.

Here are 6 reasons why you should embrace rejection:

Reason 1 - You build resilience

It strengthens your ability to bounce back from setbacks and challenges, equipping you with valuable skills for navigating the unpredictable nature of the job market.

Reason 2 - You explore other opportunities and directions in your career

It encourages you to broaden your horizons, explore different roles or sub-sectors of Architecture and Interior Design, and discover new paths that align more closely with your interests and strengths.

Reason 3 - You create new relationships and improve your networking

Even if you didn't get the job, maintaining a positive relationship with the hiring manager or recruitment consultant can lead to future opportunities.

Reason 4 - You can build on new skills

Use it as an opportunity to learn something new or build on the skills you already have. Is there an online training course or certification you can take?

Reason 5 - You get the opportunity to reflect

Reflecting on the reasons behind the rejection can provide valuable insights into areas for improvement and refinement in your professional journey.

Reason 6 - You get the chance to think about your expectations

It's a chance to refine your job search criteria and focus on opportunities that are better aligned with your ambitions.

Remember that setbacks are often temporary, and with perseverance and resilience, you will eventually achieve your goals.

Meet Sarah Anderson, Head of Contract - Architecture & Interior Design at FRAME Recruitment

Meet Sarah Anderson, Head of Contract - Architecture & Interior Design at FRAME Recruitment

We're thrilled to introduce Sarah Anderson, an exemplary employee who has dedicated many years of her career to FRAME Recruitment. In her role as Head of Contract, Sarah has been a driving force in shaping the success of our contract recruitment division within the vibrant London market. Her tenure reflects not just experience, but a deep understanding of the intricate needs of our clients and the nuanced demands of the Architecture, Interior Design, and 3D Visualisation sectors. Sarah's commitment and her wealth of expertise make her a pivotal asset to our team, and we are excited to delve into her insights in this interview.

What is one of your favourite design projects?

“One project that intrigues me is The Sphere, located in Las Vegas and designed by Populous. This is the world’s largest spherical structure and hosts a range of entertainment and sports events, immersive experiences, and concerts. I was already keen to visit Las Vegas, and as a music fan, I have added The Sphere to my list of places to see. The modern lighting, holograms, and technology look amazing, and I think they would elevate any normal music event.”

What are some of your top tips for finding new contract jobs?

"Some tips I would suggest for finding your next contract role would firstly include knowing your niche skill set. Contract roles will often be specific to the client’s needs, for example, a technical position that requires strong Revit/drawing pack knowledge, to an FF&E Designer with strong Hotel background experience or a 3D Visualiser with top Unreal Engine skills.

Knowing what you are strong at in your sector, as well as portraying this in your CV and Portfolio will get you to the interview stage and hopefully, an offer.

The second tip I would give in finding a new contract job would be flexibility. Contract roles often need someone to start very quickly, usually within a week or two but sometimes it can even be the next working day.

Having a month’s notice period can make it difficult to secure a contract role, as the client is usually in urgent need and won’t often have time to wait that long for someone to join the business. I would also recommend being open/flexible with contract length as well. Often a 1–3-month contract job can end up going on for a year plus, and very frequently we will have studios take contractors on a temp-to-perm basis if this is something the contractor is open to, so the options are very open-ended. If a studio is busy, they won’t want to let good talent go.”

What is something interesting or fun that others don’t know about you?

“Something some people might not know about me, although my colleagues certainly don’t stop hearing about it, is that I have a little red Cavapoo called Alfie who takes up my time. When I am working at home, he has listened to many calls from me to clients and candidates, so he might be a secret recruitment/architecture expert in the making himself.”
