In last week’s newsletter, we delved into the rich history of Montalcino and its renowned Brunello di Montalcino. This week, I want to take you on a journey back in time to uncover a lesser-known facet of this enchanting Tuscan town.
Montalcino’s original claim to fame: Moscadello di Montalcino
Long before Brunello became synonymous with Montalcino, the town was celebrated for a different wine: Moscadello di Montalcino. This sweet nectar, crafted from Moscato Bianco grapes, was the pride of the region.
Historical records from the 16th century highlight its prominence. In 1540, the writer Pietro Aretino expressed his gratitude for receiving “a small barrel of precious, delicate Moscadello, round, light, and with that sparkling release that seems to chatter, bite, and kick back.” ??The wine’s allure didn’t stop there. In 1685, the poet Francesco Redi praised it in his work Bacco in Toscana, referring to the “graceful, divine Moscadello of Montalcino.” Even the esteemed Ugo Foscolo mentioned enjoying Moscadello during his time in Tuscany. ?
A Personal Reflection
Over the past 15 years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing Montalcino’s evolving wine landscape up close. Year after year, I’ve observed a decline in the number of producers crafting this historic sweet wine. Determined to preserve and share this tradition, I’ve introduced the Moscadello di Montalcino Vendemmia Tardiva from the esteemed Capanna winery into my Toscana Wine Club selection. It is really worth a try!
Capanna’s Moscadello di Montalcino Vendemmia Tardiva
Capanna, a family-owned winery since 1957, is nestled in the Montosoli area, north of Montalcino. Their dedication to tradition and quality is evident in this late-harvest Moscadello, for which they are now very famous for!
The wine boasts a rich golden hue and an intense bouquet of acacia honey, apricots, pears, and candied fruits. On the palate, it is sweet yet balanced by a refreshing acidity, offering a complex and persistent finish. ??
A Delightful pairing suggestion
Have you ever tried pairing a sweet wine with blue cheeses instead of the usual dessert? The combination of the Moscadello’s sweetness with the sharpness of blue-veined cheeses creates a harmonious and surprising tasting experience!
If you’re eager to explore this exquisite wine and its unique pairing potential, you’ll find the Moscadello di Montalcino Vendemmia Tardiva available exclusively through my Toscana Wine Club.
