Monkeypox Testing Update

Monkeypox Update July 2022

Since the initial outbreak of monkeypox,?ARUP has actively participated in the formulation of an appropriate national response in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other laboratories.

New Monkeypox Test Available Soon

We are validating a new, inhouse test for monkeypox. We anticipate that this test will be available starting on Monday, July 25. We are partnering with other reference labs to support testing in the interim.

Please contact Client Services before?sending samples so we can facilitate the best testing options and determine specimen collection. Many state and local health departments are still able to provide testing with rapid turnaround times. Per CDC guidance, ARUP enocourages commuication with your local health department to determine your best testing option.

Ancillary Testing and Differential Diagnoses

ARUP continues to perform all ancillary testing for patients with possible or known underlying conditions or suspected or confirmed monkeypox infection. Tests such as sexually transmitted infection panels, HIV tests, and other tests are important for providing a differential diagnosis and optimal patient care.

Shipping and Handling of Suspected Monkeypox Samples

Any samples with suspected monkeypox that are sent for ancillary testing?should be shipped as UN 3373 Biological Substance, Category B. Please write "suspected monkeypox" on the ARUP packing list, specimen bag, and in the lab information system?(LIS) order comments. This will help to ensure that specimens are handled and tested using the proper precautions.

Please note:?We are?NOT?accepting viral culture testing for?patients with suspected or confirmed?monkeypox.?

We will share additional details on CPT codes, pricing, and specimen collection and transport instructions for our in-house monkeypox test as soon as possible.

Our teams at ARUP are working continually to address this evolving situation and provide testing options that meet?your needs. Please know that we?are here?to support you?as you care for patients and your clinical workforce.?

Please visit our?Monkeypox FAQs page ?for additional details. This page will?be updated as new information becomes available. We will also notify you via email.

Sincerely,

Jonathan R. Genzen, MD, PhD
