Monitors? Don't need no stinking monitors
In the past wrote an article about exercising at Orange Theory. How I hate the rowing part so always do that first. Can read it here https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/i-hate-row-matt-kaufman/
There again last week. They provide a monitor you wear strapped to your chest. Records all your cardiac activity, calories burned and level of exertion. Note it at the end of the hour to see if I am hitting my goals.
Last class, left the monitor at home. Absent minded at 6 AM on Saturday. When the program started, decided to see this as an opportunity to test myself.
Do you know what working hard feels like without metrics?
At our office, we do not track the number of calls or how long we are on the phone. Yet, every desk is buzzing from morning to night. Every person on the team works hard. No measurement. Odd. From day one of over 15 years with the company Joe Mullings set the tone of consistently working at as close to capacity as possible. As our team has grown, it has become the norm.
Worked out as normal without the monitor and noticed the same feeling of exertion, was clearly keeping up with and at times exceeding the class and walked out knowing that I was as close to capacity as usual.
The culture here is contagious. New folks come on to the team and they see the level of intensity from the start. Bit intimidating in the beginning. Takes time to build up their stamina. Over the last few years, the team has grown into a highly productive group, running near capacity daily and turning out extraordinary results.
All just by how it feels.
Matt Kaufman has been working with the Mullings Group for close to 16 years. The word "with" is intentional as we have a culture of partnership here. Everyone has the same goal. Always looking for talented folks to join us.
