Securing El Espígol: Monitoring Rock Stability
In Catalonia’s charming village of Gerb, the safety of the massive El Espígol boulder, standing at 32 meters tall and 24 meters wide, became a growing concern after deep cracks were discovered in 2019. To address this issue, the El Espígol Rock Stability Monitoring Project was initiated in December 2021, continuing through February 2023. This collaborative effort between the Provincial Council of Lleida and contractor Kuroba Quatre SL employed a range of monitoring equipment to keep a close eye on the rock’s stability, ensuring the safety of the community. The project’s success hinged on real-time data collection and a swift response, which was triggered within just two weeks of monitoring when the rock displayed alarming signs, including an 18-degree tilt and 5 mm displacement.
This case study underscores the importance of continuous monitoring and rapid action in geotechnical engineering and hazard management. Read More.
