Risk, Response, Resilience: Metasensing for Tailings Dams Safety
The mining industry faces a critical challenge, with tailings dams exhibiting failure rates of 1.2%, starkly higher than the 0.01% of conventional dams. This alarming trend, representing an average of three annual failures among thousands, calls for immediate action from industry stakeholders. Tailings dam breaches have dire consequences: environmental harm, economic losses, and human casualties. This concerning figure translates to an annual average of three failures out of 3,500 dams, signaling an urgent call to action for asset owners, project managers, consultants, and engineers involved in tailings management. It is a stark reminder of all stakeholders’ enormous responsibility to strengthen Tailings Storage Facilities’ safety protocols (TSFs) and honor the regulatory mandates to safeguard the environment, communities, and assets.
Encardio Rite’s Infinitus system and the Proqio platform present innovative, comprehensive solutions to mitigate these risks. Encardio Rite’s offerings—Infinitus and Proqio —serve as technological fortresses, incorporating InSAR, geotechnical instrumentation, Automatic Total Stations (ATS), Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), and Internet of Things (IoT), ground radar systems, fiber optic sensing, and LiDAR to help stakeholders continue operations while prioritizing safety. One Za'abeel wins the Guinness Book Record.?
One Za'abeel has recently been awarded the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS? title for the 'Longest Cantilever Building' worldwide, featuring a prominent sky concourse, The Link, which spans 230 meters and includes a record-setting 67.277-meter cantilever. Encardio Rite played an essential role in structural health monitoring, instrumentation, and surveying strategy while lifting The Link to its position between the two buildings, the One Za'abeel towers, and the surrounding infrastructure. During the lift, technologies such as four fully automatic total stations with 1" accuracy for precise measurements were deployed, along with our control boxes for data transmission to the database and 3D deformation monitoring systems installed on four pillars to observe any shifts. The sensors installed with IoT data loggers for monitoring parameters included displacement, strain, inclination, tilt, force, settlement, vibrations, and environmental factors such as wind, rain, fog, humidity, and temperature. The project is a testament to Encardio Rite's global provision of total asset solutions for Metasensing for Megastructures.

11 个月Talking about the instrumentation in dams in India, even in this era of emerging technologies and innovations, our experiences are still not encouraging. There is lack of will power and understanding the basic objective of instrumentation. Either the instrumentation is adopted in dams merely to embed certain instruments to complete the paper work or these are not being properly enforced, installed, maintained, monitored, reported, interpreted, analysed and even data acquired is kept in the files and no inferences/indications are being properly utilised to help the designers, construction supervisors and even providing feedback to the manufacturing industry for improvements and design modifications suiting the requirements. Even after sale service is also in question for many reasons like inferior quality instruments, flaws in contracts, maintenance reasons etc. We must come out with a robust arrangement wherein instrumentation in dams and underground tunnelling industry gets its due share and serves their intended purpose for ensuring safe and sustainable structures during their service life.
