Monica D. , Ph.D candidate in the Computational Biology Department at Carnegie Mellon University, received the “Best Oral Presentation” TransMed 2023 Award for her presentation at the 31st Annual Intelligent Systems For Molecular Biology (ISMB) and the 22nd Annual European Conference on Computational Biology (ECCB). The presentation was centered around her ISMB proceedings paper titled, “Deriving Spatial Features From In Situ Proteomics Imaging To Enhance Cancer Survival Analysis,” published in Bioinformatics.?
In this work, CBD researchers Monica Dayao, Matthew Ruffalo, and Ziv Bar-Joseph, in collaboration with researchers from Enable Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, developed a framework to extract spatial features from highly multiplexed spatial proteomics data and showed that these features improved survival prediction over non-spatial features. Furthermore, the framework was able to identify cell-cell interactions that were enriched in high-risk patients.
The ISMB/ECCB conference, which took place from July 23-27 in Lyon, France, is an annual computational biology conference providing a diverse platform for sharing advancements in computational tools for data-centric biological investigations. Emphasizing computation and methodology, this year’s conference also worked closely with the French Society for Bioinformatics (SFBI).
