Part 2 of 4 - The Rocks, Pebbles, and Sand Lesson: Terrible, TERRIBLE Advice
Part 1 of 4 - link below
------------
Countless versions of this video have been circulating for well over a decade now. In these videos, a person has an empty jar,? a bowl of sand, a bowl of pebbles and a bowl of rocks.?
In these videos (of which there are hundreds online), the person first pours the sand in the jar, then the pebbles, and quickly discovers that there is no room left for the rocks. Oh no!
The person talks about how the sand and pebbles are the lower priority tasks and “busy work” in life while the rocks represent the big important things to do. They empty the jar and try again, this time putting the rocks in first, then the pebbles, then the sand and, voila, everything fits.
The lesson of these videos is that if you can just prioritize the more important things first, you can get everything done.?
This is TERRIBLE advice.
This idea that you can “do it all” if you just prioritize better is, at best, delusional and, at worst, actually harmful.?
Here's something to bear in mind: There are literally an INFINITE number of worthwhile things that you could do that you will not do.
At first, this knowledge may seem overwhelming and depressing, but I am here to encourage you to be liberated by this knowledge.?
Time and resources are finite, and attempting to get everything done is as sure a method of achieving burnout as anything I know.
Some things will not get done. This is OK.
no way, keep building those sand castles!
