Money Market Instruments

The money market is a financing market where short-term debt securities are traded. In as much as the market is not as regulated as the stock market, in Nigeria, the Central Bank of Nigeria influences the market (CBN) through the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and via Open Market Operation (by selling or purchasing treasury bills to control the amount of money in the economy).

Money market instruments are short-term financing instruments that allow individual investors to invest in a low-risk setting. These instruments are as follows:

  1. Treasury Bills
  2. Treasury certificates
  3. Commercial papers
  4. Bankers' acceptance
  5. Certificate of deposits
  6. Repurchase Agreement
