Is there money to be made for operators?

I see a big focus from the market on the certification and manufacturing of electric aircraft (eVTOL, sTOL, etc.). But this is only the first step. And it has become time to start really figuring out how future operators will use those electric aircraft.
What business model for future operators?
Will they be able to make money?
What should they focus on?
Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) operators have several different business models, depending on their specific goals, target markets, and operational strategies. Here are some common business models for eVTOL operators:
Air Taxi Service:
This model focuses on providing on-demand air transportation services to passengers, similar to traditional taxi or ride-sharing services. Customers can book flights through mobile apps or websites, and eVTOLs are deployed to pick them up and transport them to their destinations.
Charter or Fractional Ownership:
In this model, eVTOL operators offer charter services or fractional ownership options to individuals, corporations, or organizations. Customers can book flights for specific trips or purchase shares in eVTOLs to access transportation services as needed.
Cargo and Logistics:
Some eVTOL operators focus on delivering goods, packages, or medical supplies instead of passengers. This business model caters to the growing demand for efficient and rapid delivery services, particularly in urban areas.

Shuttle Services:
This model involves operating eVTOLs as shuttle services for specific routes, such as airport transfers, transportation within a corporate campus, or transportation between designated points within a city. Shuttle services can be operated by the eVTOL operator themselves or in collaboration with other companies or organizations.
Partnership with Existing Transportation Providers:
eVTOL operators can partner with existing transportation providers, such as airlines, ride-sharing companies, or public transportation agencies, to integrate eVTOL services into their existing networks. This collaboration allows for a seamless transfer of passengers or cargo between different modes of transportation.
Aircraft Manufacturing and Sales:
Some eVTOL operators focus on designing, manufacturing, and selling eVTOL aircraft to other operators or companies. They may offer both complete aircraft solutions or specific components to be integrated into existing platforms.
Infrastructure Development and Operation:
eVTOL operators can invest in building infrastructure, such as vertiports or charging stations, and provide operational services for other eVTOL operators. This model aims to create an ecosystem that supports the growth of the eVTOL industry.
Technology Development and Licensing:
Certain eVTOL operators specialize in developing advanced technologies or innovative systems for eVTOL operations. They can license their technologies or provide consultancy services to other operators or aircraft manufacturers.
It's important to note that the eVTOL industry is still emerging, and the business models may evolve and adapt over time as the technology matures and regulations are established.

1 年If, you’ve never, or haven’t recently seen 2001: A Space Odyssey, I remind you of the scene where Dave asks HAL to open the bay doors and, artificially intelligent HAL refuses. AI is not ready for prime time; not on the ground, not in the air, not in a classroom, not in a highly tech-driven society, which becomes more tech-dependent by the day.

1 年I find the use of AI to write your articles off-putting. Why would you put your name on an article that (1) you didn't write yourself, and (2) was written partly by a non-person that is essentially "making it up"? Even if it seems logical and concise? Why is this not "cheating"? "Teacher, I totally copied my paper from the kid next to me, but he's a computer, so it's okay."
Its electrifying!
1 年A good question, Victor. And some good answers from ChatGPT? One should also look at the 84 year history of cargo UAM and the 70 year history of passenger UAM and the leading UAM service provides in New York, Blade, and in Sao Paulo, which has 2000 or more flights per day. While Blade, which offers both airtaxi and airshuttle services, has yet to make a profit, it's acquisition of Trinity Air Medical, a nationwide, multi-modal US organ logistics and transportation company, has put Blade firmly on a path to profitability. My take is that sUAS drone deliveries and larger cargo UAV cargo transport, using the EHang (NASDAQ: EH) 216L, Volocopter GmbH VoloDrone and bigger, is where the real money is.
