Monetize Your Book Week #3: Workbooks are Fun & Easy!

I mentioned creating a workbook as part of your book monetization strategy. I’m going to use the word “workbook” here, which can be substituted for?journal, companion planner, companion guide,?or any other companion product that makes sense.

I?love?creating workbooks for several reasons:

1. Readers love having one place to capture their notes and ideas, as well as put your process into practice. Workbooks provide this space.
2. Workbooks are an additional stream of income to the author.
3. Workbooks allow you to provide additional examples and information, along with the space to make notes.

Here’s how I create a workbook:

1. Save final, finished manuscript as a new document.
2. Identify text with?suggestions, action, contemplation,?or?resources.
3. Create pages with enough lines or numbered/bulleted spaces (or even open boxes for drawings) for the reader to take immediate action with your process. The idea here is you provide space for the reader to make notes, and/or pencil out their answers to your questions or suggestions.
4. Remove all additional text. Keep in mind your reader expects a workbook or companion guide is *not* standalone. The only text I aim to repeat is text needed to prompt action.
5. Add new text beneficial to the reader, such as new stories, examples, or exercises.
6. Have a cover designed that matches or goes with the book cover.
7. Publish your book and companion as part of a series (so online retailers market them effectively).
8. Read tomorrow’s post. I’ll help you take your book + companion to the next level.
