Monetize Your Book Tip 20: The Sticky Subjects of Sales & Selling

Our TIp 20: Sales & Selling is, without question, a sticky subject. Add in overcoming objections, commanding a price, holding the line when it comes to scope creep and boundary bending, and it's almost enough to send you back to a full-time job. Almost.

If you have issues with sales or selling, asking what you’re worth, or setting boundaries with clients or customers, now is a great time to sort those things out.

The only way I personally can help you out with any of those is through coaching and mentorship (and I've only got one option for that). This tip series doesn’t--couldn't--help you to do any of those things, but they are, without question, fundamental to any success you could have.

You Must Monetize Your Book includes a curated a list of the books, resources, and people I recommend to help guide you to success in these areas.

Because.

No income stream sells itself. You must be a confident salesperson.

If you are hesitant to set a price and hold the line, you will struggle. You must be confident in your pricing and not compromise or settle once you decide on your fee.

If “scope creep” (allowing clients to push the boundaries of your time, services, or both) is an issue, you will always do more than you’re paid to do (which, according to Napoleon Hill, isn't a bad thing. Except when it is.). People will treat you the way you allow them to. Nonnegotiable: Setting clear boundaries via your Contract or Agreement and how you handle client interactions is absolutely essential. More than twice, I’ve quoted my Agreement with a client who pushed the limits of what we had agreed upon. One hundred percent of the time, we were able to continue because we had put our commitment in writing.

If you love the idea of building an empire with multiple income streams but detest the idea of selling something because it seems icky or yucky, friend, you've got some work to do. Here's one more piece of advice before I roll:

Someone wants to pay you handsomely for the knowledge, experience, insight, ideas, and connections you have. This is a beautiful exchange both people benefit from. Your job is to find those people and give them what they want in exchange for what you want.

Get comfortable with that idea, sell you keister off, and build those income streams!
