Mondo Hackathon #3
This weekend Mondo Bank held their third Hackathon, opening up their incredible banking API to third party developers - and I was there with my Infraxis colleagues Richard Owen and Daniel Hobson to build something fun.
Put a bit of Mondo into your browser
My project was to build a Safari extension which - for Mondo cardholders - enhances the online shopping experience. The extension supports Mondo's authorisation flow and give the application access to the data you allow it to have. The screenshots below were made against my real Mondo account on the production system.
The most basic part of the extension is a popover menu which shows you your current account balance and amount spent today when you click it.
But the really fun bit is the price detection - for every price shown on the page the extension puts a tiny (non-intrusive) Mondo icon next to it - either green if you can afford to pay the amount with Mondo - or Red if you can't. When you float your mouse over the icon it informs you what the impact will be on your account if you make the purchase.
For foreign currency sites it recognises the currency then does a currency conversion to your account currency so it's easier to compare the costs using the tooltip - and again it shows you which items you can cover with your Mondo account and which ones you can't.
And if you top your card up to enable you to cover the cost of a 'red' item - the screen instantly updates to green so you know you can afford to pay.
This works out of the box with loads of different online shopping sites.
Thanks to the team at Mondo for another fantastic weekend playing with their software, and to all the other hacker teams who produced some stunning work. Mondo will feature them on their blog in due course !
