Monday Productive #16 with Scott Morrison

It’s Monday again and it’s time to start the week with a good energy! 

Monday Productive is a weekly interview format, featuring peak-performers from my network, who share 5 quick ideas on how to boost your productivity and stay at the top of your game.

Today’s guest is Scott Morrison. He is the Founder and Bringer of the Boom!, a co-founder of the validation platform ThinkSprint and a co-author of the Amazon Bestseller, Creative Superpowers.

1. Scott, you have a lot of things going on. How do you prioritise your time? Both strategically and on a day-to-day basis. Give me the nitty-gritty. 

I’m a really simple guy and that dictates how I prioritise.

? Firstly, I focus on things that are ‘High Impact, Low Friction’ I.e. they’re going to move me, my clients or my business forward at pace without draining time or resource.

? Then, I look at things that are ‘High Impact, High Friction’ and spend some time breaking those down into smaller, meaningful actions that move into the High Impact, Low friction’ list.

? Finally, but most importantly, I ask myself - ‘Do I love doing this?’ - the more I do things I love, the more motivated I am. After all, good strategy is as much about what you don’t do as what you do do.

2. Why should we love Mondays? What excites you to do what you do and to stay motivated when things aren’t going as planned? 

A day is just a name. Don’t believe the bullshit that tells you Monday is any harder than any other day. Instead, look at each day as a chance to move forward, however small a step. I get excited by seeing changes with my clients, learning even the smallest things and feeling the energy of the people I choose to spend my time with. For me, that’s important EVERY day and therefore staying focused on that keeps me motivated even when things go wrong (and believe me, they do!)

3. I saw you a couple of months ago. You seemed to be in great shape. What was your motivation to make a physical transformation? Do you feel more energetic and productive? 

I quit drinking and started training harder 18 months ago. It’s a choice I made because mental wellness and exercise go hand in hand and I feel sharper, more resilient and mentally stronger when I train. The demands of running 2 businesses burn huge amounts of energy - and, as the Boom! I’m expected to and love bringing positive energy to my clients. By focussing on my physical and mental wellness, I feel I’m even better equipped to do that now.

4. Imagine you are consulting a senior exec at a traditional corporate, who wants to break through the chains of the old thinking, and unlock her team’s creativity and performance.

What are 3 pieces of advice you would give her to begin with? 

? Firstly, visualise clearly what success looks like for the future state you’re looking to create. I do this with everyone I coach and get them to create a movie poster with powerful details that anchor success for them

? Next up, REALLY dig into the reasons why you and your team are not delivering this - start by saying ‘despite our best efforts, we’re blocked by these constraints’ and go through them systematically. Only by calling these out can you truly Unblock where you are

? Finally, seek out the inspiration, the tools and the people who will help you Unlock and Unleash the potential of your team. Read, view, speak, collaborate but MOST OF ALL create ACTION and MOMENTUM by focussing on the little things you can do that will be High Impact, Low Friction

5. In the last few years - what habit or belief have you acquired, that helps you today to perform better and feel more fulfilled?

Giving my inner, anxious voice a chance to be heard.

This means it’s less likely to try and sabotage what I’m doing and it’s a recognition that however strong, together or professional you may appear, there’s always a small voice that can derail you if you don’t acknowledge it.
