“I wanted to stand for those women who want to be beautiful for themselves, not for men or other women!”, says Falguni Nayar, the founder and CEO of Nykaa, one of the top players in the online beauty marketplace. Nayar is one of the wealthiest self-made female Indian billionaires and has been awarded the Businesswoman of the Year at the Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence 2019.

Being born and brought up in a Gujrati family where his father owned a small business, she too dreamt of becoming a businesswoman. After graduating from IIM Ahmedabad, Falguni started her career consulting with A.F. Ferguson & Co, but her desire to build an empire for herself led her in quitting corporate life. No doubt, setting up a business from scratch required courage, resilience, and will, but she was ready to give it her all. She realized that beauty was an underutilized market in India, and thought of focusing on the beauty retail business. Eventually, her gamble was worth it, and Nykaa is now touching newer heights everyday. The myth is that only a man can be a successful businessman and become a billionaire. Falguni Nayar is a budding example who has refuted it.
