Monday Morning Coffee

Monday morning coffee.

several times i had comments regarding playing around with parameters in seismic conditioning, seismic inversion, etc. and one of the most interesting comments was that changing parameter value here and there, overriding parameter, stretch and squeeze, etc., are dirty tricks or even cheating the science to get desired or good results.

well...

I wouldn't say they are wrong or right, but I see it differently.

imagine that you have a cup of coffee and you find that it is not as sweet as you usually have. you have two options to have the coffee as you usually have.

you can do it in a scientific way, calculating the liquid volume, existing sugar content in ppm, calculating the required amount of sugar in mg to achieve desired sugar in ppm, and so on.

or you can also do it in an engineering way, take a sip of the coffee, grab a teaspoon and add more sugar until it satisfies your tongue. of course your tongue "experience" will play an important role here.

the tools in the software are usually based on science (i.e. published paper) and have been through extensive testing on several kinds of datasets. therefore, not some kind of magic.?

of course, you will need to know the background theory and limitations on doing this and that.
