Introducing the future of butchery Mondanette Butchery Our team at ARCA UNLIMITED ARCHITECTS designed a premium meat shopping experience with open spaces and natural materials.
CLIENT BRIEF
The established Butchery located in Monument Park, Mondanette, decided to expand their offering by opening their second franchise store at Irene Link Shopping Mall.
The client wanted a bespoke foodie experience for meat lovers and general food enthusiasts whilst keeping the friendly local butchery feel.
It needed to be an experience not only tantalizing taste buds but also showcasing the products in a fresh new state of the art way. A one stop shop providing complimentary products such as wine, bread, and a destination coffee shop.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A premium meat (and ancillary) shopping experience required a unique approach to the typical local butchery. During the concept phase ARCA considered the existing butchery and analysed the flow of the shop, the feeling during the purchasing process and the use of materials. The current shop felt welcoming and open, like you know your local butcher by name. This is an attribute we wanted to repeat, by the use of accessibility, legibility, big volumes, open space and including tasting counters.
The use of natural materials was also evident in the current store and was a big influence on the new shop design. Timber, facebrick, diamond polished floors etc. were used to sustain and reflect honestly in materials and products as well as provide cleanliness, durability, and longevity to the store. As mentioned, legibility of space was important to obtain, to avoid frustration when searching for items. Using versatile product labelling and lettering we designed a system of product labelling that can be customized to change as product display changes.
The payment station and coffee barista island serves as a division between The Daily coffee shop and Mondanette. It was designed to serve as a virtual division between tenants yet seem integrated holistically into the design and ease of use for management purposes.

“Late in 2021 we decided on opening a new branch, we have been looking for a site which would meet our requirements and finally managed to secure a spot at the new Irene Link Shopping Centre in Irene. We had a plan of what we wanted the shop to look like in terms of layout and offering and to make sure that this would be a project that would change the look and feel of what butcheries should look like, modern but also with a timeless element.
After a few discussions with various Architects, we finally met up with Michelle and from the initial meeting to the first renderings we could see that our vision and her passion for this project was aligned. Not only were they able to assist with shop layout, design, and flow, but also came with brilliant ideas in terms of shopfitting and what we needed to do to raise the bar even further. The result was out of this world, and we have featured in many publications since opening from our other suppliers locally and internationally. Sure, there was problems, as with any project of this size, but the way Michelle and her team managed everything can only be described as phenomenal. I can only speak with the highest praise of Michelle and her team and the work they have done to make our dream come to fruition.”
