Moms and social media, + the mom ally of the week is....
We need to talk about...
Moms and social media.
So, there's been a lot of conversation around the impact Instagram and social media more broadly are having on Gen Z. And for good reason. In fact, we should be talking about it way, way more. But we should also be talking about how social media is impacting moms. That's why I love this Wall Street Journal story about moms, social media, and loneliness.
Like I said, we talk a lot about mental health and our kids — but we aren't talking much about our mental health. As with everything, everyone assumes that moms will just grin and bear it.
I know I really related to this article. Anyone else? Any thoughts on what the social media companies should be doing to better support moms who use their platforms?
Mom ally of the week
Maybe you've seen them on your grocery store shelves, but did you know Dr. Bronner's is really showing up for moms? While childcare rates continue to soar, the San Diego-based soap company is offering all parents who work full-time for them up to $7,500 per year for childcare assistance. (For reference, the average cost of child care in San Diego can range from $980 to $1,400 a month for a child under six, according to the California Child Care Resource & Referral Network. That's $11,760 to $16,800 a year!)

I saw Dr. B's mention on Instagram that they surveyed their employees and found that childcare is one of the top stressors for staff who are parents. Love that they took it upon themselves to identify the challenges their parents face, and then they actually did something about it! This is the kind of support we want to see companies providing parents. You can read more about it on ABC 10 News San Diego. Well done, Dr. Bronner's!

2 年Great article Reshma Saujani

2 年Great to be part of this and thanks as always for your attention and leadership on this issue, Reshma. On the moms and social media topic, I have stopped using Facebook and Instagram nearly completely because of the emptiness I felt using those platforms. I found myself scrolling when I woke up and before I went to bed... ultimately feeling inadequate and bad about myself in the process. Even though I intellectually understood that these platforms feature "performative" motherhood, it's the subconscious comparison i had to stop. I've tried to find other ways to "share" with friends - text being my weapon of choice, but also shared playlists, photo streams, etc.
