Moments of Opportunity

Moments of Opportunity

“Doesn’t it take a lot of effort to connect with people online?”

This is a question I’m asked often when I talk to people about connecting with others virtually. They often think that it has to be scheduled or a lot of work. That’s not true. There are many opportunities to connect with others throughout the day both in and out of your organization. You just need to be intentional about it, mindful of those moments and not let them pass by.

Here are my three favorite moments to connect with others in the virtual workplace:

  • Starting my workday: I look to see who is online on Teams or in Enterprise Social Network and say “hi”, wave emoji or fun gif
  • Start of a meeting: I like to take a few minutes to ask a fun or thought provoking question. Or if it’s a one on one meeting, do a personal check in with your colleague
  • Knocks on my virtual door: When someone pings me via instant messaging, it’s not just about answering their question. It’s an opportunity to connect. At some point in our convo, I take a moment to ask how they are or what’s new.

Here are my three favorite moments to connect with others externally:

  • Reviewing someone’s post: I don’t do this for every post I review, but often I take a moment to ask a question or share a thoughtful reply instead of just a like. What was it about their post that you liked? What resonated with you? What question about it comes to mind?
  • Sharing an article or post: Take a moment to tag someone directly and let them know why you thought of them.
  • Requests for help: This is a great opportunity to not only help someone out but get to know them a bit better. It can be a connection between the two of you that may not have appeared otherwise.

As you can see, none of these are planned and they don’t need to take a lot of time. They are simply ways to use moments of opportunity to connect.

What are your favorite moments of opportunity to connect with people online?

Nice ideas Chris Coladonato, CPTD A few of your suggestions fall under the category of SIP (Social Information Processing) by Joseph Walther, meaning that using asynchronous tools can also build relationship. A 'hi' emoji or wave can still have an impact on how we engage with each other. ??

I loved how you said connection needs intention more than effort!

Great insights Chris! I love the fact that it actually doesn't take this 'massive' effort to connect better with your teams while working remotely. It's about being intentional!
