These Are The Moments I Cherish As A Parent

This week is a big for our family.

Our incredible son, Crew turns 2!

This boy has changed my life for the better.

He certainly has the Cosgrove energy because he doesn't stop moving, but despite how exhausting the days might be with him, he has been the greatest gift to my wife and me.

Taking a glass-half-full approach I want to focus on some of my favorite moments of joy, surprise, and hilarity that I've gotten to experience as a dad with a toddler.

1. First Words and Cute Mispronunciations

When toddlers start talking, their first words can be both adorable and unintentionally funny. Like every toddler, Crew has a unique pronunciation of words—like calling a banana a "nana" or saying “tees" for cheese and for TV—adds charm to daily life.

2. Imaginative Play

A toddler’s imagination knows no bounds. Crew will have me read him 10 books in 10 minutes while at the same time building the equivalent of a beaver damn around me. Engaging with his fantasy worlds can make for some hilarious and sweet moments.

3. Dance Parties

Toddlers love music, and their wild, uninhibited dancing is pure joy to watch. When Elmo's Happy Dance comes on Crew gets in his own little element.

4. Copycat Behavior

Toddlers love to imitate adults, whether it’s talking on the phone with "Yaya", mimicking how I clean, or pretending to cook. Watching Crew take on these “grown-up” roles can be both hilarious and heart-melting.

5. Working Out

I try to stay active. On weekends I change up my workout routine so that Crew can be involved in those activities. His favorite exercise is the plank hold so that he can climb up on my back and just sit there and scream at me while I hold a plank. He really is a great personal trainer.

6. Cuddles and Affection

Despite the chaos and constant movement, Crew has those moments when he snuggles up for cuddles or gives spontaneous kisses and hugs. Those moments are some of the sweetest, reminding me of the love that underpins the entire journey.

I think I speak on behalf of any parent that life with a toddler can bring unexpected surprises and laughter. Their innocence and sense of wonder make even ordinary moments extraordinary!

So in closing, Crew happy birthday to you! May we have many more of them together.
