This Moment in History

I’m about to age myself here, but one of my earliest memories is a profound one: the television blaring, and my parents’ aunt and uncle standing in their living room, crying openly. Martin Luther King Jr. had been shot and killed. We were in Southern California, with the Watts riots practically at our back door, though Long Beach may as well have been a world away. We lived a modest life—lower-middle-class, with manicured lawns and comfortable rentals. The Civil Rights Movement was unfolding around us, not to us, and I remember a sense of disappointment that my parents weren’t more involved.

When I turned 18, I cast my first vote proudly for Jimmy Carter. Now, Jimmy Carter, just past his 100th birthday, has cast his vote for Kamala Harris. Unlike my parents, I’m fully engaged in this moment in history. I refuse to be just an observer watching through the screen or scrolling through social media. This election is different. I’ve attended rallies and events, showed up at get-out-the-vote efforts, and had the privilege to worship alongside Vice President Harris. Most recently, I went to a rally in Atlanta where President Obama spoke, joined by Bruce Springsteen, Spike Lee, and Samuel L. Jackson. This year, I even watched the DNC convention almost gavel to gavel and volunteered for phone banking. I’ve dedicated one of my TikTok pages to pro-democracy messages.

I know exactly what’s at stake. I won’t sit by and let this full-circle moment slip by. I am a mother, a rape survivor, a person with pre-existing health conditions. I am Black, a senior, and a woman. I will not watch 60 years of progress erased.

I WILL NOT GO BACK!

It is our time to stand together once again. Watching our Latino sisters and brothers being called trash hurt to my core today. There is a bigger threat to all of us more powerful than Fascism and Communism combined. Mother Nature is bored with us simply because of the way we treat each other. She’s just begun to sample her powers on us. So all of our world leaders who live to destroy with their hatred, wars and lust for power, I say the storm is coming. Mother will have the last word! Yes, my beautiful sister vote, stay positive and know that we are survivors. When the shit hits the fan we know what to do. Stay healthy we need you! Peace and blessings!
