A Moment with Donna…. Trees, A Legend

A Moment with Donna…. Trees, A Legend

With pen in hand, I started writing this commentary and as I did so, a storm has moved into my area very quickly. Within just a few minutes rain mixed with sprinkles of snow, accompanied by intense, dynamic winds are swirling, twirling, pushing and pulling the tall trees and their branches in all directions. Loud cracks can be heard as branches are ripped from the trees core. Falling to the ground, one can see they are dead, covered in vivid green and white lichen that have had their residence on that branch for a good deal of time. That residence is no more.

Everything on this planet has its cycles. The forest I have in my backyard offers me free courses in Nature’s University. Between the squirrels, raccoons, various bird species, spiders and other insects, coyotes, owls, a cougar, opossums, dogs, and cats…well, there is a lot to observe and learn.

Trees are amazing. Their branches provide freeway systems for squirrels and other critters, nesting environments with accompanying building materials, shelter from storms, food (depending on the tree species), a training environment for the younger generations of species, and shade to cool the environment when it gets too hot for comfort. They are also awesome communicators with each other and other plant species. Sometimes I think that their communication system rivals our Wi-Fi in its scope, intensity, and purpose.

Last evening while doing a talk, one of my associates brought to my attention a ‘Singing Cedar Tree”. No joke! Its musical vibration was recorded with some special equipment. We were able to play the recorded musical tones the trees were producing and it was very melodic.

There is a legend that the ‘rings’ heard being made by the trees are those trees during their lifetime of 500 years plus, they accumulated and never dispersed a large amount of energy. A man by the name of Viadimir Megre is the originator of this legend. These trees are considered sacred.

You may ask yourself why I am focusing on trees. Life is filled with unlimited mysteries. This legend, now confirmed by scientific recording of these ‘singing trees,’ shows us how we need to keep an open mind regarding life and evolving knowledge by paying attention, exploring, observing, asking questions and defying convention, we can expand our thinking and appreciation for adaptability, resilience, and much more.

To grow as a human being means we must face our vulnerabilities and never give up hope on being able to weather the storms of life. That which no longer serves us, just like the dead branches of a tree, must be released to make space for new growth, allowing for the changes that evolve in life.

Spring is here. ‘Ol Man Winter will not give up his season easily, however, he will eventually make his exit, allowing sunshine and spring temperatures to reign supreme.

Enjoy the vibrancy of this change of season, it is time to celebrate the gift of life.

Have a fabulous spring!
