Mom shaming is a thing!
As a single working mother, CEO, I cannot count the number of times I have been “mom-shamed”. I would be lying if I told you I was immune to the feelings of guilt, insecurity, sadness, fury, and yes, shame, that other people’s unsolicited opinions have caused
What is mom-shaming? Criticizing a mother for her parenting choices because they differ from the choices the person shaming would make. It is that simple.
This pandemic has brought mom-shaming to its Apex. So for the new moms out there, this is what I have learned from being mom-shamed for working, traveling, nursing my infants at trade shows and yes, on occasion missing (with a broken heart) a school play.
1.Mom-shaming is more often than not a projection of somebody else’s insecurities. Let’s face it, being a mom can be a tough job. None of us are immune to feelings of confusion and frustration. Keep that in mind before taking things said about you to heart.
2. No response is the best response: Stay focused on what is really important, parenting your kids-your way. Trust me, all moms know their kids. Being a mother is primal, trust that you know your kids better than anybody else. Your way is the right way for your family.
3. Do not let the thoughts and opinions of others define you or your family.
4. Never forget that you cannot control what other people say about you, and who will believe them, so don’t waste your time justifying your choices to anybody.
At a time when moms say they are managing 80% of homeschooling and housekeeping while working from home, nothing less than a zero-tolerance policy for “mom-shaming” should be acceptable. Take this as an opportunity to normalize being supportive and empathetic, not judgmental and critical.
