Moldovan uni to be powered by cryptocurrency-funded solar energy, Church of Scotland to keep fossil fuel investments, water shortage in UK by 2050...

The Guardian reports that the Environmental Agency has warned that the UK is at risk of significant water shortages by 2050 as a result of leaking pipes and overuse at homes, accounting for the loss of 3bn litres a day. This could cause damage to wildlife and rivers.

High levels of pollution from carbon dioxide has a negative impact on rice, which is becoming less nutritious as a result, with its levels of protein, iron, zinc and B vitamins going down, The Independent covers.

The New York Times reports that the UK government has offered £13.3bn in financial support to Japanese company Hitachi to build a nuclear reactor in Wales in an effort to cope with demand, as half of the current nuclear capacity is due to go offline by 2025 in the UK.

The Scotsman reports that the Church of Scotland has decided to continue investing in fossil fuels. It currently invests 8 per cent of its £272.2m Growth Fund in oil and gas companies.

An innovative scheme launched by the UN will see a university in Moldova, a country in Eastern Europe which imports 75 per cent of its energy, being powered with 1MW of cryptocurrency-funded solar energy, in an effort to find new sources of finance for renewable energy, The New York Times covers.  Under the scheme, people will be able to buy solar cells using cryptocurrencies and then lease them to the university.
