Modern Trends in Science Education
Mahdi Mansour, School of Education, Lebanese International University, Beirut, Lebanon.
Science, as a Process of Theory Change, is always fashionable. It is growing exponentially, due to the rapid increase in knowledge, expansion of information and technological innovations. The main role of science educators is to make sense of resources, by presenting science as a dynamic process of “Logical Reasoning About Evidence”, that grows and changes like any organic body and is not a finished or a fixed product. Participants in this hands-on workshop will be involved in a discussion about the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), where critical thinking, higher order cognitive skills such as constructing explanations and designing hypothesis are emphasized. The aim of this workshop is to contribute in transforming the science teaching from the “current practice” where few opportunities for discussion and critical reasoning are available, to the “Model of Scientific Practices” based on investigations, critical evaluations and developing explanations and solutions. Participants will be able to apply different aspects of reasoning and to deal with the latest trends in science education which are based on practices, content and crosscutting concepts. With the availability of a portable lab that includes a variety of equipment and apparatus, participants will have an opportunity to develop their own ideas and to test them, to enroll in group discussions, to read and write genres while performing applied sciences to avoid neglecting inquiry-based approaches to science education.
