Modern-Day Slavery Hits Kashmir: Honking and the Call for Compassion in Everyday Actions
In a world where we are often preoccupied with our own lives, it can be easy to overlook the impact of our actions on those around us. A small yet significant example of this can be ?seen these days in Kashmir, where individuals, after a long day of work or leisure, return home and choose to remain seated in their luxury cars, repeatedly honking the horn until their domestic help rushes to open the gate. This seemingly innocuous act reveals a troubling mindset—a mindset that neglects the fundamental values of respect and empathy that are central to our humanity.
A Moment of Reflection
Imagine for a moment being in the shoes of the person on the other side of that gate. They may have been working tirelessly to support their families, often under challenging conditions. No matter the circumstances, including illness or fatigue, the expectation remains that they must come running to open the gate. This thoughtlessness not only affects those working in the household but also children studying, individuals dealing with illness, and the community at large.
Tragically, this situation is compounded by the prevalence of minors working as domestic help in many households. These young individuals often bear the brunt of demanding conditions, deprived of their childhoods and basic rights. They face not only the physical demands of their roles but also the emotional toll of being treated as lesser beings.
Now, pause for a moment and ask yourself, how would you feel if your mother, father, daughter, sister, son, or wife were treated in the same way? Would you be comfortable with the thought of your loved ones being subjected to such indignity? It is crucial to realize that every domestic worker is someone's child, sibling, or parent. They deserve the same respect and kindness we expect for our own families.
However, it’s important to acknowledge that not all families treat their domestic help poorly. There are many families who recognize the value of compassion and respect. They treat their domestic workers as if they are their own loved ones, fostering a sense of belonging and care. This compassionate approach not only enhances the workers' well-being but also creates a harmonious household environment.
Islam teaches us the importance of kindness, compassion, and empathy towards others. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the value of treating everyone—regardless of their social status—with respect and dignity. In one of his teachings, he stated, “The best of you are those who are best to their families.” This encompasses all interactions, including those with domestic help, who are an integral part of our homes and lives.
Government Laws and Regulations
While slavery in its traditional sense has been abolished, modern forms of exploitation persist, often hidden in plain sight. In India, several laws exist to protect the rights of workers, including those in domestic roles. The Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1979, aims to regulate the employment of migrant workers and ensure their rights are protected. Additionally, the Domestic Workers (Registration, Social Security and Welfare) Act, 2008, was introduced to provide a framework for the registration and welfare of domestic workers. Unfortunately, enforcement of these laws is often lacking, and many workers remain vulnerable to exploitation.
Agencies that provide domestic help should also adhere to ethical standards and practices, that aim to connect households with domestic workers while promoting fair treatment and ethical practices. However, not all agencies follow these standards, leading to cases of exploitation and mistreatment.

Creating a Culture of Consideration
As members of a community, we have the responsibility to foster an environment where every individual is treated with dignity. Rather than using our privilege to exert control, we should consider simple alternatives that promote respect and humanity. A brief moment of patience and understanding can transform an encounter marked by noise and disruption into one characterized by peace and kindness.
Instead of pressing the horn, a simple act of getting out of the car to open the gate can ease the burden on the domestic worker and create a more harmonious atmosphere. It is a small sacrifice that can lead to significant positive changes, fostering a sense of community and respect for one another.
Consider this, let your child experience what it feels like to be in that servant's position for just one day. Let them understand the challenges, the hard work, and the dignity of every individual in such roles. Only then might we begin to see real change in how we treat those who serve us.
A Call to Action
In an age where awareness of social issues is growing, we must confront the pervasive attitudes that lead to such behaviors. Let us challenge ourselves and those around us to think twice about how our actions affect others. By cultivating a sense of empathy and compassion, we can begin to break the cycle of disrespect that permeates many aspects of our lives.
Let us remember the teachings of our faith and strive to embody them in our daily actions. As we move through our lives, let’s choose kindness over entitlement, understanding over impatience, and respect over disregard. Together, we can create a world where everyone, regardless of their position, is treated with the dignity they deserve.
In doing so, we not only honor the teachings of Islam but also contribute to a more compassionate and harmonious society for all.
