Mobile & Wireless Roundup #101

Mobile & Wireless Roundup #101

Welcome to the 101st edition of this newsletter. Social Networks are a very strange thing. While we were once very cautious about what others can know about us, nowadays many people want to share too much information (TMI) on them.

Recently I have come across a surprising number of discussions of people trying to give up X (f.k.a. Twitter, which is what I still call it, but also often known as ‘Twittex’ or ‘Xhitter’). The problem is that there just aren’t enough substitutes.

For me, the main appeal of Twitter is that I can find unique content that is only available on that platform. In addition, Twitter makes it easy to live Tweet or post updates, create threads using small updates (though premium users can now do long posts but some still make threads using these long posts), older X posts or Tweets are still easily searchable and can be embedded within articles and blog posts.

Meta is out of question for me for work, though I often try and post some of my updates there. The interface is clunky and the whole process is long and slow. The platform already knows too much about me, thanks to WhatsApp so I am reluctant to use it even further.

On the other hand, while LinkedIn is becoming a de facto choice for work updates, I struggle to find things, even the ones that I posted some weeks ago. Their algorithms seem to keep changing and there is no consistent user experience.

I have to admit that all these social networks have one common issue, which is that spammers find a way to keep spamming and you have no control over this. Also, there is no easy way to report their own bugs and issues. If they block a post or shadow ban you, then all you can do is just pray! ?

For those of you who don’t know me, I am a technologist with over 25 years’ experience in mobile wireless technology, currently working as an independent advisor, analyst, consultant and a trainer. This newsletter is a summary of my posts and other news that caught my attention since the last newsletter.

? Picture of the week: ?A couple of months ago one of my Apps reminded me it’s 10 years since I spoke on how LTE-Broadcast (a.k.a. eMBMS) won’t have a business case to succeed. Surprisingly I think I may have been the only person then to be critical of the business case, everyone else was a cheer leader. So it was nice to see Sebastian Barros sharing a picture from 1969 where people at the Greyhound Bus terminal in Los Angeles watched coin-operated television sets. You can read about it here:

Happy to hear your thoughts. Feel free let me know what worked, what didn’t, how I can make this better, etc. Get in touch over LinkedIn!
