Mobile operators should never be allowed to block ads

According to Financial Times, several mobile operators plan to block advertising on their networks, setting the stage for a battle with digital media companies such as Google, AOL and Yahoo. This is nonsense!

There are many reasons why this is super-bad here. Forget the implications on "net neutrality" (now you ban ads, what will you ban next?)

This is simple: I pay for my data package to consume data, why would a telecom operator participate on internet companies proceeds? Does Amazon come to Socialbakers and ask for a percentage on revenue share? Of course it doesn't! That would be silly. Web hosting, like data packages - are a commodity, and internet companies should use every force possible to protect themselves.

I don't pay for Google a monthly fee - and thats why it has to serve me ads to make money to support its services (And MAJORITY of Google's money is made that way). Or should Google ask for a cut of the data package because it provides such great services? Also nonsense.

Once upon a time in a far away land - operators used to pay service providers a percentage of money people spent on kB traffic over the mobile network. And they maybe liked the model, even some service providers liked the model. But that time is over, the operators got rid of most of their app stores, and from a data perspective (many of my mobile telco friends and clients), they became "dumb pipes".

Operators - get (mostly) money for packages.
Internet service companies - get (mostly) money from ads.
Its the business model, stupid.

P.S.: To be clear, I think that people can, if they think, use some type of Ad blocks for browsing the internet. But those people are fundamentally undermining the business models of the companies they use.

Jan, this reminds me something that has happened few years ago with mobile content on the Czech market. Looks that mobile operators are still trying the same... Unfortunately this is not about one market..

Mobile operators practice consumption based billing and there is no customer requesting for ads. Why customers should pay for loading unintended content that is monetized by a 3rd party company?
