Mobile Game Development 101
Let’s dive into the exciting world of mobile game development!
Gabriel Tanasic and Connor are here to share plenty of insights in their Mobile Game Development 101. First up, the difference between Hybrid Casual and Hyper Casual games. Gabriel describes Hybrid Casual games as having a Hyper Casual core that makes them accessible and marketable, but with deeper systems behind the scenes for engagement and monetisation. This approach aims to extend player retention from days to weeks and most importantly months. To make this work, the core gameplay needs to be well-designed so that the supporting systems are methodical and complementary.
Connor Taylor adds that Hyper Casual games were all about simple ideas that could be quickly prototyped. Whereas with Hybrid Casual games, production times are extended since player retention for longer periods is important which increases the complexity of game required.
“Planning things to the finest detail whenever possible is of utmost importance, so that when it comes down the line, if we need an upgrade system or a booster system we're thinking about that before we've even implemented it. We've got things ready on the sideline to go in so then we can slot things in really nicely. It's all well and good getting things out quickly but when getting it done with Hybrid Casual you need to make sure your code and the structure of your project is expandable,” he says.
