Mobile Broadband For Beginners

What is Mobile Broadband (MB)?

Mobile broadband (MB) is high-speed internet access via mobile networks.

Mobile internet technology allows you to do everything you usually use your Wi-Fi connection for without needing a fixed-line telephone connection.

This means you can be online whilst on the move. Whether that’s sending an email, visiting websites – or even watching streaming TV clips and downloading files – it’s all possible.

Mobile Broadband KeyPoints:

  • Mobile broadband provides internet access via mobile networks.
  • MB can be accessed with a USB dongle, Wi-Fi dongle, a computer or tablet with a SIM card, or a tethered smartphone.
  • MB can be used with any internet-capable device, provided it has either a SIM card slot or a way of connecting to a dongle.
  • 5G can deliver high-speed mobile internet but has limited coverage. 4G is slower but has a much better range.
  • Most plans have a data usage limit.

How does Mobile Broadband work?

MB uses the same signal that mobile phones use. However, they only use the signal for internet access and not for calls (unless it’s via Whatsapp or Facebook Messenger etc.)

What do I need?

Your broadband can be accessed using a small, portable USB, often called a “dongle” or a mobile Wi-Fi (MiFi) hotspot or even?tethering?a smartphone.?

Some laptops and tablets also include built-in support for mobile broadband.

USB dongles only work with a compatible desktop or laptop computer. Mobile Wi-Fi and tethering will work with any device that supports wireless networking.

Can I Use Mobile Broadband Abroad?

It depends on your contract. Some mobile tariffs have a block only to use them in the UK. This is most common with Pay-As-You-Go. Due to Brexit, most tariffs are reverting to data-roaming charges, depending on the network.

Is broadband unlimited?

Again, it purely depends on your contract. Most MB deals are not unlimited. However, Vector Communications can provide complete data packages.

When buying a MB service, it’s essential to consider potential usage. Choose a data cap that’s too high, and your money is wasted, but go too low, and you could be hit with extra fees for exceeding the limit. However, our CapZ – Bill Management Tool will keep you within your budget.

What is 3G, 4G & 5G?

3G, 4G, and 5G refer to generations of mobile technology.

The 3G data was the first to offer broadband service over a mobile network; then, it developed into 4G. This vastly improved connection speed for mobile networks.

5G is now the latest version of mobile technology. This can provide faster speeds than 4G.

Should I Get 3G, 4G or 5G broadband?

If you are buying a new mobile service, you should ensure that your mobile can support 5G services. 3G is now outdated and pretty slow, whilst 4G is gradually replaced by 5G.

However, 5G is currently on a slow rollout. This means 5G coverage is only in major towns or cities.

Are there any downsides to MB?

Yes, as with everything, there are some downsides. MB downsides are stability and usage allowances.

Although mobile broadband is popular, it’s still behind home broadband in terms of speed. If you require a guaranteed stable, fast connection, you’re probably best advised to look for a fixed-line broadband solution — although mobile broadband is a brilliant backup.
