MLK: A Benchmark for Service

In law enforcement, we are public servants. Our mission is straightforward: protect the American people and uphold the US Constitution. Make no mistake about it, the second part (upholding the Constitution) is simply a redundant phrase…..upholding the Constitution in itself protects the American people, both today and in the future.

The work we do is for others, not for ourselves. Sure, we are also the beneficiaries of the freedoms we uphold and the safety and sanctity we provide, but it is unlikely you do this job simply to better yourself.??

On Martin Luther King Day there is no better time to reflect upon the notion of service. A word that is synonymous with service is sacrifice. Serving others is not a selfish act, it comes at a great personal cost. Those costs include foregoing potentially higher paying employment opportunities as well as missing birthdays, anniversaries and other significant family events over the course of your career. At times, it comes with physical costs including illnesses, injuries, mental health decline and even death.

I want to thank you for your service and sacrifices. Today's recognition of Martin Luther King’s service and life-long and life-ending sacrifices should serve as a good benchmark for continued motivation.

Thank you for what you do for this country. Please accept my sincerest gratitude for making this country a safer and better place for me, my wife and my children, as we are the beneficiaries of your selfless service and sacrifice. I strive to return the favor to you and yours.??

Please have a reflective MLK Day and try not to let the current hardships of your dedicated service tarnish your underlying commitment to the service of others.
