MLH Local Hack Day, Just A Week Left To Go!
One of the most popular hack days is coming back!
MLH Hackathons are quite famous for generating a lot of traction very quickly. They end up usually as a really good way for people new to hackathons, prototype, and software engineer, to come up with ideas from scratch, and build upon them, and showcasing their prototype to the world!
What is it?
MLH Local Hack Day is a one day event held everywhere where teams of students from different schools and universities come to participate in open source and pitching fresh, new ideas.
In the words of MLH themselves,
Learn Day is a week-long conference hosted online that you can share with your community. You can pick up the new skills you need by participating in workshops and talks with a community around the world.
What is Open Source, and why should I care?
Open source refers to the software philosophy of the visibility of products,
something people can modify and share because its design is publicly accessible ... open source software is software with source code that anyone can inspect, modify, and enhance, via opensource.com
They can be a good way to get started with exploring the different variety of projects and work out there, and a good start to learn something from others, as well as contributing together with different people on a platform, like Github, to get together and make a finished result.
What does it feature, and how much time do I have?
"Local Hack Day: Learn" starts in just a few days and you still have time to register. You can find the registration link here. This year, the event features a lot of workshops to attend. Here is some of them!
1. How to Collaborate on Code Projects with GitHub
2. Prototyping Websites and Mobile Apps with Adobe XD
3. Build Your First Skill with Amazon Alexa
4. Basics of Blockchain with Horizen
5. z/OS Mainframe APIs: We're Always Online
6. App Deployment & Security with DigitalOcean
7. Building Data-Driven Apps with Elasticsearch
And even more! You can check out the complete list here.
See you there!
MLH can be a great way to get more exposure to Software Development with the passion of getting your ideas and thoughts out there, perhaps even strongly motivating you to get into similar projects down your career path. Neither the less, if you have the time, I would really recommend trying it out and seeing what you can learn.
