Last week, I had the opportunity to share insights on TV about the importance of self-leadership, especially in these very sad challenging times.
It’s easy to feel lost, overwhelmed, and even helpless with all the uncertainty & cruelty around us. As I discussed during the interview, effective leadership begins within. Leaders must practice self-leadership to guide others, embodying optimism, inner strength, and purpose even amid uncertainty.
1. Lead with Vision and Hope
Leadership isn’t just about managing operations; it’s about inspiring human spirits. Hope is not about denying reality but about choosing to see a future worth striving for. Communicate openly about challenges, yet continually connect your team to the company’s mission and long-term vision. When people feel their work contributes to a bigger purpose, they find meaning, even in difficult times.
“Hope is not denying reality but choosing to see a future worth striving for.”
2. Recognize and Amplify Strengths
Your team holds skills and strengths that can anchor the entire organization. When employees feel recognized, their sense of worth and engagement rise. During the interview, I emphasized the importance of understanding each person’s unique strengths—not just their roles. Acknowledge specific qualities like courage, adaptability, or creativity to reinforce each individual's impact on collective success.
“Your people’s strengths are the backbone of the organization.”
3. Lead with Empathy and Human Connection
In challenging times, people crave connection. Leading with empathy—checking in not for performance but to genuinely ask, “How are you?”—transforms relationships. Listening is a powerful act, and showing genuine care can ease anxieties and build trust.
4. Offer Flexible Work Arrangements
The pandemic taught us that flexibility works. Learning from that experience, continue to offer arrangements that allow employees to balance personal and professional lives. Flexibility isn’t just a perk; it’s an acknowledgment of the complexities people navigate daily.
5. Provide Opportunities for Meaningful Contribution
People want to make a difference, even beyond their job roles. Organize volunteer opportunities or initiatives that allow employees to contribute to meaningful causes, fostering a positive outlet for purpose. This not only strengthens community bonds but reinforces a sense of purpose beyond profit.
6. Prioritize Self-Leadership as a Foundation
A key lesson in neuroscience that we call psychology: 60% of success in business stems from mind. During my interview, I highlighted that as leaders, we must take care of ourselves—mentally, physically, and emotionally. Self-leadership isn’t selfish; it’s essential. By maintaining a grounded inner state, we can provide stability for others. Remember, optimism and a steady presence are contagious.
“As leaders, our self-leadership reflects on those we lead. Take care of your inner world to inspire a stable and hopeful environment.”

For Employees: Navigating Uncertainty with Strength and Connection
While leaders set the tone, employees play an equally vital role. Here are some steps to maintain focus and purpose:
1. Anchor on Personal Strengths Daily
In tough times, knowing your strengths and using them restores a sense of control. Identify one personal strength and find a way to apply it each day, whether it’s staying calm, thinking creatively, or offering support to a colleague. You’ll find confidence in what you can control.
2. Cultivate Moments of Hope and Positivity
No matter the external challenges, there’s always room for hope. Begin each day with a positive intention, such as gratitude or curiosity, and share uplifting stories with colleagues. These small practices can shift your mindset, sustaining you and those around you.
3. Connect and Build a Supportive Network
Remember, “strength in numbers” is more than a saying. Build informal support groups, where you can safely share feelings and encouragement. Reach out, even briefly, to foster camaraderie, reminding each other that you’re not alone.
Be the Miyagi in a World of Daniels
In the classic story of The Karate Kid, Mr. Miyagi serves as a grounded mentor to the spirited and eager Daniel. Like Miyagi, be the calm in the storm, embodying wisdom and hopefulness. Don’t let external chaos disrupt your inner state. Guide those who are caught in negativity, and remember that this is only part of the journey—a voyage that will ultimately make us stronger, more connected, and more purposeful.
Through my TV interview and beyond, my goal is to spread the message that by practicing self-leadership, leaders can create a sense of certainty in an uncertain world. This inner stability not only strengthens our organizations but also the communities around us. Embrace the role of hope-bringer and connector, and watch as optimism and inner strength spread through your teams.
