Mitzie Hunter’s Community BBQ Event
Mitzie Hunter’s Community Event took place on Sunday, August 11th 2019. This event was a celebration of Mitzie Hunter who has been MPP of the Scarborough-Guildwood riding for six years. She has also supported YouthLink Youth Services, which serves to help troubled youth with services like educational services, counselling, and homeless youth shelters. There were a few companies at the event including the Toronto Zoo and there also was a high school sports team, which was the West Hill Blue Hawks baseball team.

YouthLink Youth Services was founded in 1914 as the Big Sisters Movement and later on as the Big Sisters of Metropolitan Toronto.

In 1971, the Big Sisters decided to finally retire the name and become Huntley Youth Services.

This was done to appeal to both boys and girls who needed counselling. A decade later the Huntley Youth Services changed their name again, this time to YouthLink Youth Services, a name that still stands today.
We greatly appreciate the publicity Mitzie Hunter gave to Scarborough-Guildwood residents about YouthLink Youth Services and its homeless youth shelter.

Mitzie Hunter's BBQ Event
There were three officials from either the federal or provincial parliament in Ontario and in Canada at the Mitzie Hunter BBQ event on August 11th. These officials included John Gary Anandasangaree, federal MP of the Scarborough-Rouge Park riding, Mitzie Hunter, provincial MPP of the Scarborough-Guildwood riding, and John McKay, federal MP of the Scarborough Guildwood riding.
John McKay said this about the event:
“Congratulations Mitzie on this day, just pretty impressive, I do not know anyone else in the legislature that can put an event like this, very very impressive.”
This speech sums up the day as a huge community celebrating Mitzie’s victory was seen by the different companies and people in the Scarborough-Guildwood community.
There were lots of people around the event having fun and enjoying the barbeque.

The first topic Mitzie Hunter talked about was about her life goals. When she was in her 20’s she talked about the University of Toronto.
“Looking at the top and seeing the University of Toronto, as you know is a very distinct structure right, remember seeing the concrete building at the top of the University and I knew that was part of my journey and that I needed to complete my degree at UofT and move on from there, I would always remember that when moving from that space.”
The advice received from this message was to not rush anything and to self-reflect like “What do I want to with my life” and “how am I to achieve my goals?” These were questions Mitzie Hunter asked herself and made a plan to accomplish her goals by graduating from the University of Toronto and then moving forward to her career path after that.
As seen on Mitzie Hunter’s pamphlet, Mitzie Hunter gave a speech on the rising gun violence in Canada:
Mitzie Hunter noted that she put a “Tough issue on the cover of the newsletter,” as she noted that “young people are dying right in front of us.”
She talked about a young boy who graduated from Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate Institute who was “shot dead” a few days after his graduation.
She talks about the need to do more to reduce gun violence not just in Scarborough-Guildwood, but also Toronto. Hearing about a young man shot dead after graduating from high school was personal to Mitzie Hunter as both Mitzie Hunter and John McKay went to Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate Institute.

Mitzie Hunter Thanks Her Community

Mitzie Hunter thanked her community for supporting her and helping her get re-elected three times in a row. “I have been re-elected three times in this riding and the last time was very challenging as I only won by 74 votes.”
She said she could not do it without the “community comes out to support you.”
This quote is very significant as it shows that not one person can do it all by her/himself. It takes a team to get through an obstacle and that was true for Mitzie Hunter in the last provincial election.

A person introducing Mitzie Hunter to the stage at the Mitzie Hunter BBQ event said this about her:
“Strong voice for Scarborough-Guildwood and Queen’s Park in our community and in Ontario and as a woman and an aspiring leader I can tell you Mitzie Hunter inspires me in more ways than one.”
Mitzie Hunter has paved the way for many aspiring young girls who want to become like her one day or perhaps serve as MPP of Scarborough-Guildwood one day.
She has been serving for six years and has won her riding three times. She was also the Minister of Education for Kathleen Wynne’s provincial Liberal government when the Liberals were in power shown in this CBC News article. She has experience in knowing just how important education is to a child's future.
