Mitigating the Coexistence between Legacy and Emerging Technologies

We've been talking a lot about the trend that despite the massive layoffs in the technical sector, demand for skilled talent across industries remains heavy as companies adopt new technologies. At the same time, something else often gets overlooked: the fact that legacy technologies don’t just disappear overnight. This circumstance presents another obstacle to successful outcomes in IT hiring.

With the ever-evolving technology, new programming languages, frameworks, and tools emerge regularly. As a result, this rapid pace of change requires tech professionals to continuously update their skills in order to remain relevant and competitive. Meanwhile, technology platforms that were once mainstream are rapidly becoming obsolete even though they are still being widely used in many industries and will likely continue to for a while. Suddenly, however, there are few IT professionals with the expertise to support these legacy systems.

So, we are faced with a tough conundrum. On the one hand, innovative technologies are opening a whole new field of IT roles that need to be filled through retraining or reskilling. On the other, this is depleting IT departments of IT professionals trained on legacy technologies that, while highly specialized, are no longer hip or desirable. Consequently, hiring managers often struggle to find IT professionals able to support an organization's existing IT infrastructure and guide its transformation and modernization.

Our own Charles Arconi offers a compelling case study about the scarcity of engineers able to manage legacy storage platforms. He also highlights the grave consequences for any organization that is unable to produce requested records during litigation. We are happy to report that in the past decade we have been very successful in helping our clients avert such catastrophic scenarios.

The reason we have been successful in bridging the talent gap between legacy and emerging technologies is our comprehensive and flexible approach to IT staffing. Firstly, our precision-based IT staffing unit specializes in sourcing technical talent certified both in emerging and legacy technologies. In addition, we devote special attention understanding the specific needs of each client and provide staffing guidelines how they can best meet their technology goals. Finally, depending on the specificity of the respective IT project we can offer a tailored solution combining different categories of IT resources that will provide the most successful outcome.
