MIT Launches Innovative Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in AI

The MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing has unveiled an exciting new initiative aimed at advancing research at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and various academic disciplines. The Tayebati Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is designed to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in scientific research, as well as to explore the realms of AI in music composition and performance.
Program Details
This inaugural program will accept up to six postdoctoral researchers for a one-year term, with the option for renewal for an additional year. The fellowship is made possible through a generous $20 million donation from Parviz Tayebati, an entrepreneur with extensive technical expertise and experience in startups. Tayebati expressed his pride in supporting a program that promotes interdisciplinary research and collaboration across different fields. He hopes this initiative will inspire a new generation of scholars to push the boundaries of knowledge and innovation.
Focus Areas and Mentorship
The Tayebati Fellowship will allow candidates to engage in projects across six key disciplines: biology/bioengineering, brain and cognitive sciences, chemistry/chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, music, and physics. Each fellow will benefit from mentorship from faculty members specializing in both their chosen discipline and AI, fostering a rich environment for academic and professional growth.

Broader Impact on Computing Research
This fellowship is part of a broader initiative at the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing to promote innovative research in computing. The college currently offers three postdoctoral programs that provide training, mentorship, and opportunities for fellows to expand their research capabilities, particularly at the intersection of computing and other fields. Among these programs is MEnTorEd Opportunities in Research (METEOR), which was established in 2020 by the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Recently expanded to encompass the entire college, METEOR aims to support outstanding scholars in computer science and AI while enhancing diversity in the field. Additionally, the Social and Ethical Responsibilities of Computing (SERC) initiative allows researchers to explore the societal implications of computing. SERC postdocs lead interdisciplinary teams of MIT students on projects addressing critical issues such as generative AI, data ownership, and the societal effects of gamification.
