The Business Implications of GenAI Event Report is Here!

At the recent Business Implications of Generative AI (BIG.AI@MIT) conference, some of the best thought leaders from academia, industry, and venture capital grappled with the technology’s major dilemma: How to quickly embrace and adopt AI while protecting society from its harms. The inaugural event, held November 15 on the MIT campus, co-hosted by MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy , Thinkers50 and 埃森哲 , attracted more than 300 attendees.

For some panelists, the decision to dive in and adopt AI tools is obvious. They hope to reap efficiency and financial rewards, knowing that the technology’s full maturation will take time. Yet others want to tread more cautiously. They see ethical and economic risks such as bias, increased market concentration, misinformation and mass unemployment.

In this newly released report we highlight some of the high-level takeaways from the BIG.AI@MIT event and offer recaps of the sessions.

How Do Paywalls Shape News Coverage?

As news consumption shifts from ad-supported models to digital subscriptions, how does this impact the content we see? IDE researcher, Paramveer Dhillon and co-authors analyzed 17 years of paywall adoption across 17 regional U.S. newspapers to understand how economic incentives shape news coverage. Their study found a slight but significant decline in local and soft news coverage, with the effects varying by region. Notably, local news declined more in smaller cities and areas with an influx of younger residents, while soft news increased in these same areas—suggesting a shift to attract digital-savvy audiences. The findings highlight the ongoing tension between financial pressures and editorial decisions in the evolving news landscape.

An Ocean Away, A World Apart: Tech Ecosystems in the US and EU

At the 2025 DLD (Digital – Life – Design) Conference, IDE co-director, Andrew McAfee delivered a passionate call to action for Team Liberal Democratic West, highlighting a critical challenge: Europe is falling behind in tech innovation and economic growth. Citing the Draghi Report, he outlined a “tale of two gaps”—a decline in productivity relative to the U.S. and a striking disparity in venture capital investment. While Europe matches the U.S. in government research funding, it lags in turning startups into high-growth public companies, with a staggering 10x gap in market capitalization. The message was clear: if Europe wants to maintain its ambitions, it must close these gaps—fast.
