Misunderstanding from Texting

Science says 80% of communication is nonverbal! No one knows this better than a director.. The line "Good morning" can be played an unlimited number of ways.. happy, scared, cautious...perhaps flirtatious... and on an on...get it? It's not in the wording but the meaning behind it. I'm very scared how this world has turned to social media, which is really nonsocial media, relying on the written word, and often some contrived photos. I'm amazed at how through a simple email one can make a friend or enemy these days, and yet they don't even really know you. You can tell almost nothing from a note or photo cause it's so easily misunderstood or perhaps so creatively written and often has no basis in reality. A photograph which is 1 30th of a second in time does not necessarily convey the truth other than what was captured in that brief moment. I'm writing this cause I think the world is blind to the limitations of the written word and the still frame, lets say on a facebook page or perhaps linked in post. This pandemic has accelerated the impersonal communication taking place via text and photos in a frightening way. That's why I love and recommend zoom, so you can see if the other person is sleeping or getting excited about what you're saying...this is not meant as a zoom promo, but zoom is the closest form to good communication without being there at this point. Here's to being in person and not taking social media and texting so seriously! Wishing everyone effective communication. David Jasse, DMJ Studios.
